I don't know what I'm doing in this venture yet, so please help me out.

Here is my setup:

Optoma HD65
Onkyo TX-SR606
Klipsch 5.1 with Klipsch 10" sub

My current dvd player doesn't have hdmi output. So I need something else.

I don't "need" blu ray since my projector is only 720p. I'd like to get all the Necessary options, but I really don't have a lot of dough left after the above mentioned component purchases!

What do I need to look for in an inexpensive dvd player that will get the most out of the other components? What options do I need?

Do you have any recommendations on players?

Thanks!

You can find blu ray players now used or refurbished for around $100. Those have great upconverting and can be set to 720p.

So is that what you would do, I assume?

Could you post a link to one for me?

Buying an HD-DVD player today makes no sense. They lost the format war, and no new movies are coming out in that format. Either buy an upscaling SD DVD player or a BluRay player (which have come way down in price). I have a 720p DLP, and both HD-DVD and BluRay look fantastic (better than upscaled SD DVD), so I don't understand your logic above (720p is a high def reoslution).

You have to admit that an HD DVD player makes a great "upscaling SD DVD player" and costs about the same. But you get the bonus of having a full 1080p HD player and hundreds of very cheap HD DVD discs being sold very cheap. (Worth repeating... ) I have a 1080p DLP so HD DVD made a lot of sense for me, it was the best route for me to build a library of quality HD titles and have top notch upconversion for Netflix rentals.

:iagree: I had just bought an "upconverting" player, a Sony NS-77, when Toshiba threw in the towel. Bought an A3 for $79 with 7 movies and promptly returned the Sony. No brainer.

I also got a Sony NS-77H last May when Best Buy was blowing them out for $49.99 when new models came out. This was just before I bought my HD-A30. Both are hooked up to my DLP but the Toshiba bests the Sony in upconversion. The Sony's a decent little player but sure wish I'd put that $50 toward another A30 instead. Oh well it's useful for DVDs and keeps wear and tear off the A30.

True- hd DVD players are excellent upconvert DVD players- but the window of them being a deal has passed.
I agree with the above poster- go for a blu-ray player. Even new, you should be able to find some deals below 200.
If you're looking for an excellent upconverter you may want to save up a bit... The panasonic bd60 with the unipher chip is 3 or under. I just bought my samsung 2500 for around 3 bills; it's arguably the best blu-ray player for DVD.
