After all is said and done in my quest for a true stand alone HD-DVD player I've got an HD-A30.
I was wanting a Player that could bitstream the HD codecs but lets face it, the value of HD-DVD starts rapidly diminishing when buying the XA-2, A35, or UP5000.

Buyers Remorse, not really, it actually isn't that bad.
Thanks to the efforts of some determined individuals the HD-A30 CAN BITSTREAM MOST CODECS (no True-HD or DTS-MA) with some different firmware.
A30 -> A32.5 halfway is still OK
Guess I'm stuck doing onboard->PCM conversion for True-HD and DTS-Core. After doing a quick survey of the HD-DVD I have, most are DD+ anyways
I can live with the onboard for D-THD, and How many North American DTS-HD releases are there? 1???

THOUGHTS / DISCUSSION ???

A perfectly acceptable choice you have made.

Can you really tell a difference when you bitstream the DD+ material?

I have an A30, so I'm curious.

Also, if it thinks it's an A35, does it automatically just onboard the TrueHD?

All HD-A30 owners, Just wondering have you seen these posts?

link -> region free A30 bitstream info

link - > crossflash an A30 into a quasi A35

link -> crossflash your EP30 or A30 (incl. PAL capability) into region free EP35-mode

With this Info, It seems like the HD-A30 is the best value out there for HD-DVD players.

A word of advice. If you have an A30 or A35 and plan to make it into a regionfree EP30 or EP35, first of all make sure that your TV or projector can handle PAL. The player will output NTSC when playing NTSC discs, and output PAL when playing PAL discs. There is no PAL-to-NTSC convertion. Even though the EP30 and EP35 can playback NTSC, they will have PAL as default.

If you just want to make your A30 into a quasi A35, then you don't have to worry about PAL at all. It will be a NTSC only player locked to region 1.

So, I think I'm going to give this a shot.

I read the instructions, so after this hack, I just update the quasi-A35 to the latest firmware - 4.0, right?

Thanks in advance

Yes, and remember to use the A35 firmware version 4.0.

One more question:

Once this hack is in place, for audio settings, do I just set everything to "Auto" or "Bitstream."

I donwnloaded the manual for the A35 to check it out, and it's not all that clear. It is lumping DD+ with TrueHD for setting. Is the setting actually Dolby Bitstream?

Thanks again.

To get bitstreaming through HDMI you have to set 'Digital Direct Audio Mode" to ON. This choice is only in the A35 firmware, so you won't find it on a regular A30.

As the player thinks it's an A35 it will try to send TrueHD as bitstream, but as the hardware is not in place there will be no sound.

You have 2 choices:

1) You can leave bitstreaming on as default and change to PCM on the few (if any) TrueHD discs you have.

2) You can have PCM as default (the player will be just as an A30) and change to bitstreaming when you want that.

I just changed an HD-A30 to an all-region quasi HD-EP35. I played a region 2 PAL disc and it works, fortunately both displays accept PAL signals. I have better all-region players, Oppo DV-983H and DV-980, but this is pretty cool. The process is well documented by Viking61 and the others so despite my rudimentary PC and firmware skills it all went fine. It does take some time but if I can do it without harm to the player, I believe anyone can.

Good work ..

Just be aware that some region 1 discs (not many I think) are encoded with something called RCE in addition to the normal region coding. Then you will get an error message like: 'This disc is not formatted to play in this region'. To bypass this just enter the RCE hack, which is:

1) Turn on player
2) Open tray, put disc in tray but don´t close
3) Push T.search on remote
4) Push 1, 3, 9 and 1
5) Push T.search on remote
You will see TEST on your player
6) Press PLAY on the remote

Yes, I saw that in the information available and had printed it out with all of the other information. Thanks.

So to confirm, it's not possible to bitstream TrueHD with a "dirty" A30? I did the conversion a year ago, but just now got an Onkyo 607. The Digital Direct Audio option has always been there, so I did do it right.

That's correct. It won't bitstream Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. For those two you will have to let the player decode the audio and send it as PCM to the amp.
