The short answer is if you are not having problems currently with the player, then leave it alone. i have 2.0 firmware with no problems so I haven't bothered to update.

Absolutely not! My HD-A1 turned into a brick when I updated it to firmware 4.0 I bought a new in the box HD-A35 as a replacement and have had no problems with any movie playback and it is still on it's original firmware.

ill echo everyone else's sentiment - with firmware updates, don't do them unless you feel you HAVE to (and i'd say this goes across the board for all of your gadgets)

im still happily rockin' 1.3

uhhh...hd what...?

I've updated my XA-2 everytime using the disc sent by Toshiba. In my opinion it has always improved performance. Only caution is make sure you don't lose or cut the power during the update process or you'll brick your player.

I have always kept my A-35 update to date, loading in each firmware update as it was mailed to me by Toshiba. I never had a problem, but of course, I never tried to create a problem by doing what the instructions warn me not to do.

However, part of updating was to support new or pending features as HD DVD discs were released using them. The reality is that there will probably never be any new HD DVD releases, and therefore, no new or pending features to start to support.

I've got an HD-A1, A2 and A30 (with the A35 mod), and I've got the A2/A35 on 4.0, but left the A1 on 2.6. Updated the A1 to version 4.0 and ran into some disc reading problems on retail (original owner, not rental) discs. Example disc was Mutiny on the Bounty... downgraded back to 2.6 and have not run into any problems. I'd say it's pretty safe for the A2 or A3x series, but that's just my personal experience with the A1 (across 2.5 years).
