Looks like my XA-1 is on the way out... gonna miss her!

Is Toshiba's offer of $215 to replace the unit worth it to keep my HD collection going?

You could replace it with a unit off eBay for cheaper.

The drive doesn't read HD anymore and I am starting to get intermittent lock-ups, bad reads, and other "ghost in the machine" events.

Anyway, I love the player and use it for music as much as for (formerly) HD.

Anyone here know if the A1 drive will work in the XA1? Used shops, around here at least, seem to have A1 units quite regularly.

Actually I recommend a Samsung BD-UP5000. It is a dual HD DVD/Blu Ray Player but it also has the Reon HQV chip 24p playback bitstream audio and deep color. Its is basically a XA2 that plays Blu Ray discs. You can get for less than 150 on ebay

Hard to trust samsung where BD is concerned. I have lost faith with them myself.

Especially when it concerns the 5000. They have provided almost no support in the past and will offer absolutely no support in the future.

Although this thread is almost a month old....

Did you try cleaning the laser lens of the drive? Dust and even small hairs can collect on or near the lens, giving the errors you describe.

You can get lens cleaning discs in stores for cheap.

Although a better, but more labor intensive method is to physically open the drive and "clean" the lens. I use camera lens tissue wrapped around a q-tip. Don't use liquids.
