Hey guys, I purchased an HD A1 way back when it first came out. It no longer works. Since I still have 30+ HD DVDs, I've been looking on Ebay for a replacement.

Which model is the best to get?

Thanks for any help here

Toshiba XA2. The best HD DVD player IMO and one of the best DVD players ever made.

XA2 +1.
I bought 2 A2's just after they came out. Last year I bought 2 brand new XA2's from fleabay and I'm glad I did since I havent seen a single NIB XA2 since then.
They are very nice machines, though they, like BD machines, take way freakin too long to boot, load discs and start playback.

Thanks guys. Looks like the XA2 just so happens to be the most expensive of the used ones available. I guess you get what you pay for though.

+1 for the XA2. I have both the A35 and XA2 (and have used the A1 and A2, as well). I was so impressed with the XA2 that I have 2 additional players in my closet that I picked up cheap when HD-DVD folded. The A35 is no slouch, but I threw a SD DVD in for the kids today on my XA2 (which I hadn't used in quite awhile) with my Pioneer 151 display, and I was quickly reminded how special that player is. The reason it hadn't been used in awhile is simply because I've been using my WD TV Live or PS3 to stream the kids' stuff from my server (they don't care about video quality, although it's still not bad on the Kuro), but I need to start using the XA2 again.

As qz3fwd stated, it takes a LOOOONNNGGG time to boot, but it's one machine that's worth the wait.

I think the hd a35. Does it all. No shutdown bug like some of the xa2's.

I have a Toshiba HD-XE1 (European Version of the HD-XA2) and it's the BEST.
The A35 looks nice, but we cannot compare chassis or the technology.
It's a more "price combat" player with a good picture.
The HD-XE1/HD-XA2 is the only "High End" HD-DVD Player available.

When looking on Fleabay for XA2s, bear in mind that the Onkyo HD805 is a rebranded XA2, with the only differences being cosmetic: operationally they are the exact same.

Not unless you have a XA2 remote to access the picture functions. Also the Integra DHS-8.8 is the same as the Onkyo HD805.

True (I forgot about the remote itself, but even that "little detail" is easily overcome with a Harmony). The functionality itself is present in the XA2/DHS-8.8/HD805. Any of these players is an awesome find, as they truly are the only "high-end" HD DVD players ever built!

i would have to vote for the xa2.the a35 is not a bad choice either but if you also have a bunch of std.dvd's the xa2 and its upconverting abilities is the better choice.yes some xa2's have the darned shutdown bug but the workaround generally takes care of that problem-it does for me anyway.i have both players xa2 and a35 with f/w 4.0 and honestly the xa2 boots up and loads an hd-dvd disc much faster than the a35.so in short xa2/onkyo 805
followed by the a35 is how i see it.

HD-XA1 could perhaps be considered a high end HD DVD player also, 'top of the line' model that was replaced by the XA2 (which unfortunately didn't have a replacement). Of course the XA1 is only 1080i and can't do all the audio codecs...

And the XA1 couldn't do 24fps either.

I have an Onkyo 805 & a Toshiba XA2. Mmm, I like the Onkyo plugged into my Onkyo receiver, but the XA2 has a better case ( added plates to the outside). So I say both! All kidding aside, they are the same machine ( for the people who don't know), I figured I'd mention the Onkyo because I don't think too many people ever bought this one.

I had an XA-1 first. I really liked that player. I then got an a-2. Great little player, I use it in my bedroom system. It loads a bunch faster than the XA-1 and it convinced me to look for an XA-2 right after the format war. I got one with low hours and it rocks. Load times are not that bad and picture quality at 1080p/24 is outstanding. I bought an A-2 off ebay extra for parts. The real cool thing is I just bought another XA-2 from a lady that was liquidating some audio/video gear from her home. Remote, player and power cord for $40.00. I updated firmware to 4.0 and it works perfect! I never get that lucky!
I like the XA-2.

You're kidding. You want to compare the top with the last place?

Yeah... I'd look at an A35 if you need analog out or an A30 if you don't. Upscaling almost as good as the XA2.

You are just about 1 year too late to be asking this question as i bought 2 brand new XA2's last year about this time and the supply has since dried up completely for NIB units.

i haven't used it but what exactly about it make it the worse? it's using a next gen hd console to process the video seems like it would handle video just as well as the a35 or better not to mention lower boot&load times.

I have an A2, which can output a 480i HDMI signal. This allows me to connect it to the Anchor Bay VRS ABIT 2010 upscaling chip in my Denon 2310 receiver. Allowing me to watch standard DVDs @ 1080p/24.

XE1 (=european XA2).

Awesome upscaling plus the codefree-for-DVD firmware = perfect!

Really! I never knew that. Sounds like a real winner. How do they play BD's with the XA2's HD DVD drive?

Uhhh? HD DVD and BD both use the same laser, only the lenses are different. It has the same upscaler and can output 1080/24p and bitstream audio just like the XA2.

Best buy for your money in my opinion.
