Love my A20 and just won a Panasonic BR DMP-BD655P. My A20 is connected using a high end 2007 year HDMI. Since the BD655 a low level player I'm going to use the provided HDMI cable.

Since my Denon AVR 987 has only 2 HDMI inputs I have to disconnect the A20 to play the BD655 and vice versa.

  1. Putting aside the blu ray hd dvd difference, is the newer BD655 a better player than my A20?
  2. Should I swap the BD655's oem HDMI cable for the older but much higher quality HDMI cable currently used on my A20?
  3. Should I return the BD655 to COSTCO for a different Blue-Ray player.

The occasional Blu-ray rental and one of many standard DVD's I own. My HDTV is a 1080i max Sony KDf-46E200, AVR is a Denon 987. One correction to my op my Toshiba HD-DVD is a A20 not an A2.

I look forward to your advice.

You are surely NOT playing blu-rays on your A20, so I assume you are using it as an upconverting DVD player. The first question is: do you have any HD-DVDs that you want to be able to play? If not - you probably do not need the A20 hooked up at all and can use your new blu-ray player for both blu-rays and upconverting DVDs. If you DO have HD-DVDs to play, then you might consider picking up a hdmi switch box so you can keep everything connected to your tv all the time. They are inexpensive and usually work fine.

Thanks for your help. No Blu-Ray from my A20. We do have a small yet very good collection of HD-DVD's and a large selection of standard DVD's. What is your opinion of HDMI cables? I ask since I'm using the came-with-the-player HDMI on the Panasonic and a 2007 era expensive HDMI on the HD-DVD.

I am not a believer in expensive hdmi cables . . I've never seen a difference and never read an objective report that spells out a difference. I use fairly inexpensive cables that seem to work perfectly. Monoprice.com is a good source for quality, reasonably priced cables of all types.
If this was my setup, I would use the expensive cable on the blu-ray player (thinking over time you will use that much more than the HD-DVD player), and use the freebie cable on the A20. But I honestly doubt you will see or hear any difference regardless of which cable you use with which player.

HDMI is a completely digital format. It is also encrypted (in most cases including HD DVD and Blu-ray player output) so the signal must be decrypted by the receiving device before it can be displayed.

If you are seeing and hearing anything at all, your cable is working. If it completely fails or fails intermittently in a very obvious way, then you have a problem.

Unlike analog cables, there is really no way that HDMI can work to some degree without being essentially perfect.

Use whichever cable on either device as long as they both work.

Good advice from you both. I'll post any differences noticed by swapping the two cables around.

My A2 player used to be the best upconverting DVD player I own. I'd say the demo Panasonic BD-10a blu ray player was almost as good, and had many more picture and digital filter tweaks.
Now I think I like my Denon 757 Multi format DVD/hi def audio player best in my setup but I would be happy with any of the 3.
I do have a bunch of HD DVD disks so I wont be retiring it any time soon till I decide to replace all of them with BD copies, some of which may never happen.
