Geoallenbob

Assuming your player has the last firmware installed, the player and disc are both clean & the player is properly ventilated, these are most likely defective or damaged discs that will need to be replaced.

I have played several of these HD DVD movies before, the error message is showing up now.

Thanks,

Agreed, definitely a damaged disc. Even if you we're able to play it before somehow or other the disc do become damaged overtime if it was not properly manufactured initially.

What titles were they? Warner discs have been rotting. My A2 stops and displays this error message on these discs, while my A30 freezes and the time counter keeps going.

Tried my copy of I Am Legend tonight and it's not working anymore. Read it could be other WB HD-DVD's. Ended up watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory instead and it seems to be working OK so far.. Slightly different theme and style. Ah well.

I'm beginning to get a number of these errors on my HD DVD discs as well - I think it's time to either replace them outright, or rip them to a media server.

So I have 8 WB HD DVD's. Of them 5 crapped out. I wrote WB about I am Legend before I tested the rest. They said they'd send me a mailing label and give me my choice of DVD or Blu-Ray for replacement. It sounds like they're going to do that for all 5. None of my discs from other studios have quit working yet (that I know of), so perhaps other studios had theirs manufactured at a different plant and they'll be OK.

Not working:

I am Legend (won't play at all)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (crashes about halfway)
Troy(crashes about halfway)
Harry Potter 1 (crashes about halfway)
Harry Potter 2 (crashes about halfway)

I assume these are all dual layer discs and that whatever is between the first and second layer was a bad batch (and a large one at that). I am Legend is a combo disc so it's different in that regard.

Working:

Harry Potter 3,4,5 (combo disc)

My A2 does both on the same title in the same section. If you attempt to select a chapter that is in a bad area, it gives the error. If you're playing the movie prior to it getting to the bad section, it will sometimes give the error, other times it will freeze and the timer will keep going (this seems more common).

They actually sent me the whole 8 movie set (the 8-disc version without special features discs) as replacement for Harry Potter. And they paid shipping both ways. Overall, really excellent customer service. Fast turnaround time, good communication, etc. Much faster than my updating of this thread.

Apparently there's only one person working in the "defective disc" department. I called (818) 964-6000 and was transferred to a lady. I got her answering machine so I left a message last week. I never received a call back so I called today and asked the receptionist if there was anyone else who could help me out. She said that lady is the only one handling defective discs and if I don't hear back from her by Wednesday I should call again.

I had e-mailed them as well, but haven't heard back. I guess I'll wait a bit more. They could be backlogged.

I have four more Warner HD-DVDs to test. 22 have played perfectly from beginning to end, 4 have crapped out with the 408bc509. Those four I've tested on three different players, all with the latest firmware. They all crap out at the same position so I assume they are the discs. I have pulled the receipts for all four defective discs in case they ask. They were bought from Amazon and Best Buy. I assume they are authorized dealers.

Hopefully I can get this all sorted out. However, I have 85 HD-DVDs. 30 is not even half. I started with the Warners because I heard they were the most prone. The others I'll test on an "as I watch" basis. I don't have enough free time to test 55 discs from beginning to end. :/

Lady just called. I'll be shipping four movies back once I get the pre-paid label. She wanted the receipts... not a problem for me... can't say for sure if she would have mentioned the receipts if I didn't bring them up.

It'd be interesting if you could note which 4 weren't working for you and which did work. Also, I wonder what they do with all those returned discs. Maybe they have an engineer in a lab somewhere that analyzes them to see what failed so they can improve the manufacturing process of future optical discs (blu ray, and whatever comes next). Perhaps they just go in the shredder.

04/07/08 Adventures Of Robin Hood, The [HD-DVD]

Movies I found to be defective. Superman Returns froze half way through, but didn't error out. Video froze, but timer on HD-XA2 kept going forward. Forbidden Planet errored out (forget when). I came back to an error so I didn't write down the timestamp. Willy Wonka errored out about 1 hour 6 minutes into the movie (layer change I suspect). Robin Hood errored out about half way through the film.

Most of my HD-DVDs were bought from Amazon.com and Best Buy.

I don't know what they do with the defective discs. They probably recycle them. It's not worth their time to test them if they can just reissue Blu-ray replacements.

The only overlap between what I had and what you had appears to be Troy. Mine failed and yours didn't. I also had a much higher failure rate in what I owned than you for some reason. 5 out of 8 discs. Mine were stored indoors on a shelf and weren't boxed up or in outdoor storage so I can't say that I abused mine at all to cause a higher fail rate. Bum luck possibly?

I bought the Cream Royal Albert hall from amazon and got the same reading, at different times on different songs. My player is a 30. Frustrating...would amazon send a replacement disc or is the whole hddvd riddled with the error code? Great music btw when it plays

I also had a bad "Cream at Royal Albert Hall" hd-dvd and got Rhino to replace it. The replacement works perfectly - and is excellent.

You might get Amazon to take yours back but I doubt they have any replacements. But if they refund your money - I think this title is available on blu-ray now.

I contacted Rhino at 'customerservice@rhino.com' for help with my bad hd-dvd.
They referred me to 'DrRhino@Rhino.com' who took care of matters for me.
You might try the same.

A long-time audio/video addict!

I have many HD-DVD's from Warners. Now I know what the problem is by reading this thread, I always thought it was my player and disc alone. I purchased "Superman Returns" in 2007 and it froze immediately at the part on the roof with Clark and Lois. Then it played once or twice just fine but now it does it again. Other WB titles have the same code, Last Samurai, Valley of Elah and now just recently, Deliverance. I just wrote to Warners to complain. What a jip.
