I hate to cross post, but this news really belongs here, even though I posted it in the huge thread in the projector forum:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...95#post4938695

Warner/HBO/New Line/etc., Paramount and Universal have formally announced HD-DVD titles...89 in all so far, due to appear Q4 '05 (likely Q1 '06 for Universal's, based on earlier reports). Some interesting "big" titles, mixed in with the expected back catalog underperformers.

I would expect CTS (and maybe Disney) to counter announce something soon for Blu-ray.

Yes, but how much will the hardware cost? I'll be waiting for them to hit the <$500 mark before I jump.

Wow, some nice titles in there. I wonder how good it will look compared to D-Theater?

Larry, it should look as good or better. Hopefully sound better if they go lossless.

$500 is my sweet spot.

1)$575 for my first VCR
2)$450 for DVD first player
3)$350 for my JVC D-VHS used
4) Hopefully $400 to $500 for a HD-DVD player

sidenote: Maybe I better hold off on making that $150 worth of D-Theater tapes I was going to make this weekend :o

WeÂre doomed. It will never work

Thanks for the info! :)

I counted 38 titles I'd buy right away if only they were released on Blu-ray. Showed the list to my wife who doesn't give a damn about the upcoming format war and she said buy both. What can I say, she's a huge Harry Potter fan. ;) So as long as both Blu-ray and HD-DVD hardware are priced around the $1000 mark looks like they both may get a sale from my family.

Let's not forget that the studios haven't announced what the films will cost either; I expect a MSRP of $40 or so for most titles, especially if they have to be "flippers" with HD on one side and SD on the other; if Best Buy has to stock SD and HD DVDs, don't count on seeing too many in your local store...

From what I heard about "Catwoman" I don't think HD DVD will help this movie but I plan on getting it cheap on DVD eventually.

Hey guys, when do you think they will start pulling regular dvds from the shelves for good?
How much do you think HD DVD discs will cost?
I really don't want to pay $30 for a HD DVD.
I assume this will drive down the cost of regular DVDs right?

Somewhere in the 2012-2015 timeframe. Remember, VHS tapes are still made. Sales of any format will ultimately determine things.

re: titles
There were a few titles that I was surprised and glad to see on the list. Here we go again, just like when DVDs came out.... :)

Black Rain, Braveheart, Coach Carter, Elizabethtown, Forrest Gump, Ghost, Grease, The Italian Job, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Manchurian Candidate, Mission Impossible 2, Save the Last Dance, School of Rock, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Sleepy Hollow, The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, Star Trek: First Contact, U2 Rattle & Hum, Vanilla Sky and We Were Soldiers.

Definitely something for everyone in there. I was hoping Election would be in there for a dark comedy. BAsically thats the only thing that they are missing a dark comedy

I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to killin' folk - Unforgiven cannot wait for the hd-dvd of this gem

I will be doing the same, except it will be around the $300 mark for me. Hopefully by then the format war will be over, or at least one will have a considerable success over the other. It may just come down to who gets to that price point first, because I believe that both formats will be able to survive this generation.

Then again I may not get any HD player since my HDTV only has component HD connection, and I just bought my HDTV last year, so its not going anywhere anytime soon. Whats the lastest word on connectivity with HD-DVD players.?

Lots of nice titles there, but things are going to have to get a whole lot nicer before I jump. I think my move will be Q1 2007. I jumped on DVD and my first player, with a pricetag of 495.00 was not that bad. A grand to play these disks and a speculated 40 bucks a pop will leave me wallowing in DVDs for quite awhile I'm afraid.

Those that want to jump? Jump! You'll bring the prices down for me :)

Now that I have an HTPC, I've been hoping they'll make disc drives for computers that include HD-DVD and BluRay capability, along with the existing optical formats. Anyone have info on this?

Couple points to ponder:

1) Nobody has made a perfect DVD player now in, oh, nine years. My bet is that this issue happens again.

2) Most- not all- HT enthusiasts are likely going to wait for a player that does both formats. I got burned buying into DVD-A and later bought a player that did DVD-A and SACD. Maybe this is too anecdotal, but I don't see it that way.

3) If they don't support component, and put out a player that does both formats and DVD-V as well as existing players (say Denon 2900 as an example) it will ****** further sales. Ditto for SACD and DVD-A. Is this asking a lot from hardware vendors? Yep. I think that the first totally universal player will sell better than any other player. I also think that a lot of people will be waiting for that player.

4) Warner releasing Sopranos on HD-DVD will not get many double-dippers. It looks good on HD, but the price of a double-dip to go from anamorphic DVD-V to HD is not worth it. Same for 'Earth to the Moon', which has an issue with aspect ratio...

5) Universal announcing Apollo 13 in early '06 after announcing a new release for that DVD this summer isn't going to endear anybody either.

I don't see any of this being Big News. I don't think the market will support this to the same degree as DVD-V for a long time to come.

Thanks, pcdoctor. I suppose a single drive that will read HD-DVD and BD is not likely.

I would bet a basic player that will play HD-DVDs and regular DVDs will be anywhere from $500-$800...Alot of times, crossing the $1000 mark turns people off to it.

I bet the recorder will be $999. ;)

Im actually more curious about how much the movies will be.

Thanks for the list amilian.

I know the titles have just been announced, but does anyone strongly believe that Final Destination [HD-DVD] will have a DTS soundtrack?

That would make a great movie even better. Plus the airport scene and bus scene ["Do Over" {LOL!}] will be even better IMHO. I own the DVD, and I remember before it was released, there was a rumor going around on the net that FD would be New Line's first DTS title; but sadly, no.

Thanks.

I, like many people have expressed would jump onto HD-DVD when players pass the $500 threshold. I bought a my first DVD player for $475 and that's sounds to be about the range I would make the jump to HD-DVD.

I highly doubt we will be seeing a universal HD player anytime soon. My guess is neither side will license their technology in this way until they are sure that they cannot win the fight outright.

Do you really think the PS3 is going to show up at $300? I wouldn't be surprised if Sony positions it a little higher priced and farther up the living room food chain than the PS2.
