This may be a dum question, but with DLP's limited to a 720p chip, and these new breed of HD-DVD 1080i (ToShitbox version or Blue-Ray), how is DLP going to handle this, and will it be that much better than what we can see on them now. IF the DLP's or DVD player bump down rez to 720 for the limited resolution of DLP's, will this bump down make the image just marginally better than a good prog scan player doing a 3:2 pulldown?

720P HDDVD should look a lot better than 480P, same as it does now frrom HD broadcasts, satellites, and tapes.

I think both Blu-ray and HD-DVD will be 1080i (unfortunately), in which case you'd want a good deinterlacer & scaler to get 720p. An external scaler like the Lumagen HDP or HD Leeza should do the trick. Or, superior 1080i processing (1080i -> 1080p -> 720p) is built into the Sharp 12k and Marantz 12S4, eliminating the need for an external solution. Most anything else will be sub-standard (1080i -> 540p -> 720p).

Also, to answer your question, 1080i properly converted to 720p is just as good, if not better, than 1080i native (as evidenced now by 1080i DVHS, OTA, sat, and cable feeds). But, of course, not as good as 1080i properly deinterlaced and fed through 1080p display.

So the 12K & the S4 bumps up 1080i to 1080p before downshifting to 720p?

Yes (as well as Sharp's previous 10K model).
