I noticed that The Sopranos is listed as being amoung one of the first HD-DVD titles released. Does anyone know if it will be only Season 1? A box set with Seasons 1 through 5? There's no mention of this is any release list that I've seen.

Not me. I'm happy with my DVDs right now (for the short term) as I already have seasons 1 - 4.

As much as I want to see all seasons in high bit-rate HD, I'll wait until after the format war to pick up this series in HD.

Like you said the HD-DVD title list doesn't specify which seasons are coming out so I'm guessing just the first season to start with. I'm sure the other series will be released afterwards pending the results of the format war.

My guess is that they'll all be remastered at a higher bit rate than what you recorded from DirecTV or DishNetwork. Both higher audio and video bit rate. I've only seen seasons four and five in HD and I look forward to seeing seasons 1 - 5 in HD after the format war is over.

They should look and sound better than any broadcast source.

If not, what's the point?

Probably lower bitrate, but more effecient CODEC like MPEG4 rather than MPEG2.

Well, I mean a higher bit rate than what the providers send to us. Not what HBO sends to the content providers.

For example: If HBO sends content to Dish Network at 40 mbps and Dish Network sends it to their customers at 13 mbps, I'd guess that the HD-DVD version will be VC-1 at 15 to 20 mbps. Which would look a lot better than HBO on Dish Network.

Also, if the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray merger actually goes through and Blu-Ray physical technology is used, the data rate may even be higher than that mentioned above for HD-DVD. :D

Comcast sends whatever they get from the providers, so 19.2mbps for HBO.

I dont' have Comcast. How's it look? I'm assuming it's mpeg-2. Am I right?

About the same as any MPEG-2 source- adequate for some things, mostly inadequate for high-motion, regardless of the format (720p/1080i).

After watching D-Theater, that is why I am hopeful towards the forthcoming HD DVD formats.

No they dont. Hbo on comcast is far from being 19.2mbs. Have you ever even checked? Avg bitrate is ~12-14mbs. Mabye many years ago when there werent many hd channels, but now, no way.

Can I ask the obvious Question? Why isn't it on D-Theater? Or other content for that matter.
Is it jvc? HBO? or despite interest here, not enough volume to make business sense.

Yes, I have checked and here in the Boston area they send what they get. It might average out to ~12-14 in your region or on the show you're seeing, but I know for a fact they just pass through whatever they're receiving.
