Sony is selling UMD movies for PSP (snicker) for $24.99.

NO WAY BRDs sell in the "teens".

CD prices have risen...

DVD's are about movies & people watch them in living rooms, how many people actually use their computer drives to sit and watch movies- Bluray's Andy Parsons

Understood. But, now what do the HD DVD faithful do if Toshiba releases without TL?

Unless Toshiba says "just kidding", you have a bunch of people saying "wait for the TL players".

Dead out the gate.

This was very foolish unless Toshiba is posturing, or dead serious about TL at launch.

cinch. I don't know if it will meet DVD demand at its climax, on the other hand if it does not it means a shift in mentality, buyers become renters. Is it possible? yes, but that is a bit difference.

Assuming only one format, this is my guess of the future.

prices of 2G players/recorders drops to around 300$, at that point DVD players come off the market, if rental costs the same and you have an 2G why rent DVD? If you have a 2G why would you not buy the premium movie on 2G instead of DVD. A year or two more and DVD is dead (i.e. cannot be found)

The thing is that the same way that it is not up to Sony to put 8L in the specs, it is not up to Toshiba to put 3L on the specs. Toshiba showed that it can be done and how to do it, the same way Sony showed 8L BR can be done. It is up to the different groups to decide if the players must be able to play those disks, and then on to the studios if they will use those disks

AnthonyP,

Apparently Microsoft will use HD-DVD in the new XBox 360.

$99 is mass market, not $300.

The electronics makers & Hollywood won't wait around for HD/BRD to surpass DVD if it sputters like SACD... it will move to something else quickly writing this fiasco off... especially if a "unified" format offers reduced royalties.

It is this premature release that might cause a "shift in mentality" and that shift could hurt the studios. DVD is a cash cow now and in the immediate future... HD/BRD jeopardizes this in all actuality.

Where did you hear that? I mean we have only a few days to go for the unvailing of Xbox 360, but all of the recent rumors point to a just plain DVD.

If they went with HD-DVD, I highly doubt they can get it out by this year's end.

I'm guessing that the MTV unveiling of the XBOX 360 Thursday night should answer the DVD or next-gen disk question one way or the other. My guess is that it will be DVD based.
