didn't sony say a long time ago that they would eventually make blu-rays with up to 6 or 8 layers (~200gb br discs?). i don't have a link, just remember reading it.

My take is that they're just saying this to sound good. Are the first players/discs on the market going to support 45gigs? No. I have no doubt they did it in the lab, but it's just a smokescreen.. it will never be mainstream like Blu-Ray dual-layer.
