Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD FAQ: Link and Discussion thread

How about a thread for XA1 users?
After all, isnt this supposed to be Toshiba's "high end" model?
Has anyone gotten their's yet?
I expect to have mine tomorrow (fingers and toes crossed)
Lets have some feedback on the model "X" !

I will do that. I want to get pics of the inside of this puppy. The ones I see of the A1 have me curious. And besides, I'm like a little kid, I need to take stuff apart to see what makes it tick

Same here. It's due here tomorrow. I have TLS and Serenity waiting. I know one thing I will be checking is the DTS issue that the A1 is having.

arronwt, that's the $64,000 question. The latest information I saw said yes, the video and audio components are the same. But, the XA1 does have the SHARC Processor logo on the front and I don't believe that the A1 has one internally. So, I personally won't rule anything out until I have it and have the time to go thru it all.

I'm not sure how the motorized door thing is going to work in my video cabinet I remember my old JVC SVHS decks had a similar door (though not motorized) and it was a pain in the butt.
If my friend gets his A1 this week, I can make a real comparision

OK, a few initial things:

-The audio "problems" in the A1 are present in the XA1; DTS re-encoding, Warner titles to low. Warner today acknowledged it was an authoring issue (the volume, not the DTS part).
-It's slow, just like A1. At least I saw it coming.
-The front door is smooth and virtually impossible to hear as it opens and closes.
-The fan can be heard as the unit is turning on. I noticed during Serenity that after I hit play in the menu, it immediately slowed down to where I could barely hear it.

More to some as I go. Waiting for it to get dark in the room so I can really get a feel for it.

Did Warner mention what they were going to do about existing discs with too low volume? (BTW, where did you see this mentioned?)

I notice that you have both the HD-XA1 and the Sony Ruby.

I was wondering, if the HD-XA1 outputs 1080i60, and you feed that signal to the Ruby through HDMI, can the Ruby reconstruct the original 24 frames per second and display the signal as 1080p24?

Got my X today, thanks Robert
Only had time to view Samuria and it looked awesome! Bye bye macroblocking, blacks look rich and smooth. No audio issues but I did have to turn the volume up a little more then usual (I have sd dvd's with lower vol. then this). Worked great right out of the box. No tweaking. Just pluge and play
Cant waite to get more discs.
Robert, per our arrangment, expect something in the mail in a few days
More reports later, but now, it's almost my bedtime

OK a little more to feast on, but first:

bferr1, this was posted by Alan Gouger, one of the forum administrators. Not official, but they do know.

Quote:
I just got a call From David ( From Mexico ) at a gathering with some industry insiders ( cant mention names without permission ) and all current software on the market has faulty audio track.

Robert, thank you for getting this to me so quick. Almost called and asked if I could drive to the store and pick it up yesterday. But, reason prevailed and I waited. Oh, and the almost $3 a gallon for gas killed that idea real quick too.

OK, now back to the player. I've had more time to play around and I've got a few more things to add.

-The fan getting slower once the movie starts that I mentioned before; turns out I was wrong. It was actually the disc speed slowing down.

-While the remote feels better than the one included with the A1, it's still no treat. The auto backlight is not consistent. I'll have it in my hand while the light is out and I'll try to make it come on by moving it or shaking it. Most of the time though, no luck. But, it'll be sitting on the couch and the bass will make it light up. Frustrating to say the least.

-I have the player hooked up via optical and 6-channel analog. It's hard to compare because the bass management and EQ settings are very different from the XA1 and my Pioneer Elite 56TXi. I'm not really sure which one I like more at this point.

-Serenity's authoring is bit rough. I've had the player search for about 30 seconds before getting to a scene after selecting it. This does not happen with TLS.

Last but not least, a fews more pics and A VIDEO!!

The HD Menu in action during TLS.

Jeff, thanks for that. I did see Alan's post in the other thread, but for some reason I missed that he was one of the mods, and so I reflexively took what he was saying with a grain of salt-- especially because he mentions "David from Mexico" as a source.

He was most likely refering to David Bott, one of the operators of this forum

I did connected it directed via HDMI @ 1080i and it played beautifully.
NO problems at all.
The question is, I have CH set up and want to see how this player pairs with my VP30 + Ruby
