I bought the HD-A1 yesterday and hooked it up via a 6 ft. hdmi cable to the Panasonic receiver and through a 25ft monoprice hdmi cable to my Infocus 4805.
I can see the setup screen but I get no audio through hdmi on my receiver regardless of bitstream or pcm. When I go to play a movie the player freezes up with nothing on the display, not even an error message which I can make popup by swapping cables during power on. I am quite frustrated in having the ability for an all digital hookup but not being able to take advantage of it. I think my player might be defective for when I hooked it up in my analog system, the player would freeze on POTO and Apollo 13 in some of the already referenced scenes. Responsiveness is sluggish and I can get the logo to display. But running video or audio is a no go on hdmi, except if I by pass the receiver. Should I return and get a new player? Anyone else using a similar combo such as the panny receiver?
Any help would be greated appreciated.

You have 31 feet of HDMI cable, isn't the limit at 15 feet total?

Reading my Toshiba 65H85C manual it says, "You should not encounter difficulty if you use an HDMI cable shorter than 16.4 feet (5 meters)."

I currently use the Panasonic S-77 upscaling player in this confiquration and it works just fine. I never had problems with this one. Also if I go straight with 25ft there is no issure. The receiver itself acts as a repeater and just takes the audio stream from the source and passes hdmi 1.0 to the display. My receiver isn't even getting the audio signal from the Toshiba, but it is seeing the hdmi device connected and can pass the video setup screen at any resolution.

Could it be the HDMI 1.0 revision on the receiver?

The hd-dvd and upcoming blu-ray players output to hdmi @ 24/96. You need HDMI v1.1 to handle multichannel 24/96. If the XR-70 uses HDMI v1.0, the inputs aren't compatible with the new HD disk formats.

If buying a new receiver, I would probably wait until the XR-57 ships in June, as it will support hd-dvd and blu-ray.

The inputs on my receiver are 1.1 compliant for hdmi, I listen to multichannel hi rez DVD-Audio all the time. It can also decode DTS and Dolby Digital through the input. So its should be compatible with the Toshiba. It decodes or handles LPCM up 96Khz/24 bit on multichannel sources.

I use the same setup and the SR70 does work fine and passes through Audio AND video.

I did have to play with the setup to get it working. Check the manual under Settings 1 for DVD on setting the HDMI input.

When you select DVD with your remote, keep it pressed down until you see HDMI light up on the SR70. That's the way to toggle between HDMI and Analog inputs - pressing the DVD key on the remote until the input changes. This may be your problem.

Thank you Rich, I will try that at home as I did not realize there was a way to toggle the hdmi and analog inputs in such as manner, I usually waited for it to detect a powered on source. I will report back with my findings later on.

Well, I can get regular dvd's to play just fine on the system. When I go to play HDVD's the player hangs up and the front display blacks out but it is still on. I left it for awhile thinking it was slow loading but it would not load the Hi def disc. So back to Best Buy with this unit since I can't get HDMI video and audio on hi def discs to work, But with regular discs, it plays straight through the receiver and projector just fine. If anyone knows of any other work arounds let me know. I am off to find another player, perhaps the Walmart model.

hey Ricanmeng,

where you able to figure this out ? I have the sa-xr70 receiver (hooked via hdmi to a S97 player)
I am thinking to buy the toshiba player but after reading your post I was a little bit concerned. I thought the panny receiver is 1.1 compliant. Somebody else here mentioned his setup was working ...

Yes, the setup is working just fine... I have the exact setup, including the Pany S97 as well. I route the A1 through the XR70 for audio and video, and out to the projector (via a switch).

I finally found another player with a later manufacturing date from Best Buy. I quickly hooked it up at home and no hdmi problems whatsoever. I also bought a new lg 30fz40 regular (not slim) crt for the living room and am going to sell my projector. The image is good on the projector, but the resolution will never be there due to it being a 4805 infocus. The LG can be on as long as I need it and the contrast is always killer.

The sound from the unit is so satisfying through my polk R series speakers. I had to recalbirate the sub for the toshiba (increase gain). CD's through the tosh are also coming into the receiver with more gain than usual, but still sound as good as the S77 through hdmi. I put it a dual disc and the player had to be rebooted because it would not read it (NIN Downward Spiral) and regular DVD-A's work fine only as the legacy surround formats (DTS, DD). The player is slow as molasses but once it gets going the picture is immaculate. But now I am limited by viewing size once again, mainly due to WAF of a constantly dark living room. I would recommend this player only to a non-novice and do hope that the hybrid formats from Warner play without a hitch. I also have zero glitches from any of my movies.

On the new player, what's the firmware level? It would be interesting to see if there were changes. Mine is an earlier build.

Yesterday I received my XR70 and today I get to send it back. The front right channel was DOA. I only bought the stupid receiver to hold me over until the Panasonic XR57 is available now I'm sorry I did that. :(

I will check the firmware later tonight, and hdmi audio makes a world of difference when it comes the SAXR70, it must be the synergy or interaction of hdmi components by keeping everything in the digital domain until the very last moment it has to. I can enjoy movies with the likes of sound from true MLP dvd audio (just about).

so I got the toshiba player last night from BB. it works just fine with the panny receiver via HDMI. I only have the "last samurai" and noticed when selecting bitstream I only get 2 channels as for PCM I get 5+1 @ 96 khz.
I guess is because as far as I heard the decoding is done in the player, so I guess that should be fine, I would care less who does the decoding ...

I had also purchased an lg 30fz4d with it. The player works with my xr70 either straight through or inline with a monoprice hdmi 5 in 1 switcher. I have moved the tube to the bedroom and am again using my infocus 4805 with the xr70 and the S-77 player and toshiba, but the projector still hangs up trying to play hd-dvd audio and video through the receiver into the projector, it plays sd-dvds fine. If I put the switcher inline the situation doesn't change, if I change cables and use a really short one by moving my projetor, still nothing, Toshiba is at firmware 1.2, now do I have to do a firmware update to get the player to receiver to projector to play nice via hdmi?

HD-A1->receiver->projector (all HDMI, HD-dvd, lockup)
HD-A1 (video hdmi)->projector (all disc formats play fine)
If the gentleman who has a similar setup could tell me his firmware number on the infocus 4805.
Current setup is 5.1 analog into receiver, hdmi from Toshiba into switcher, S-77 into receiver, output from receiver into switcher, switcher out to projector, it works but I want all hdmi.

My HD-A1 plays just fine through my XR70. Make sure the player is set to output PCM.

I have tried that already but to no avail. It plays fine with my lg tube in place, just not hd-dvd with the infocus 4805 in place.

Weird one there. I guess the next best thing you could do is to connect the player to the infocus direct and use the analog outputs from the player to the XR70.

That is the setup I am currently doing, but feel somewhat cheated for the true beauty of the panny's lie in their all digital signal path, plus I really have to crank the volume more on analog than on the hdmi audio in, I will try the firmware update on the infocus, it is suppose to fix resynching issues upon resolution change, maybe it is adding delay into the hdcp handshaking process.
