I have been waiting for 3 weeks for my local store here (Boscov's) to get a new shipment of the Toshiba HD-A1s in. They state there is a delay because Toshiba is currently upgrading the software and re-programming it.

I called Toshiba and customer service said that they have not heard of any re-programming being done on the HD-A1s.

Is it true or not? Is Toshiba re-programming the software to address some issues with the HD-A1?

Thanks

Chances are it's due to firmware readiness. Though you'd think Toshiba would realize that the majority of people buying HD DVD players today would be comfortable with downloading a firmware update and applying it themselves. It's likely that anyone NOT capable of doing so, wouldn't notice any difference between firmware revs anyway (;

I agree that they must be holding back to correct some of the early errors as I have been waiting for a player for about a month now. I haven't however been hounding all possible sources to try and get one because I felt that perhaps they were going to stop the channel to try and address some of the issues quietly.

Hopefully, the will begin again shipping product. If this isn't a holdup due to fixing of errors they are gonna really have a supply problem. This may also be an attempt to move some of the X-A1 stock that probably wasn't flying off shelves to those who would consider the extra $300 simply out of desperation (I was almost there a couple of times myself). :D

The Japanese version of the HD-XA has been updated to 1.1/1.09/2.0O (The USA version is 1.0/1.09/2.0O) so it looks like we are getting real close to an update.

any updates on this guys? I called my local Boscov's dept store and they STILL don't have the HDA-1 in yet with the new firmware.

I'm moving into my house on Friday. This is the only missing piece to my setup and it's driving me nuts. Everyone around here is out of stock of the HDA-1s as well.

I thought Walmart had the D1 units in stock yesterday? Aren't they the same as the A1 only black with rectangular buttons?

I seriously doubt its a firmware holdup. It probably is production based. They are probably just behind on making enough units. All they have to do is release a new firmware update to correct everybody after purchase. I believe some units have defective drives like my first xa1.

A friend of mine who runs a high-end video store and installation company told me that he has been told that the Toshiba players have been recalled/stopped for modifications. He did not say if it was firmware or hardware. I heard this last Saturday.

I don't want to start a rumor here but, in the light of this thread, be interested to know if there is any truth to it.

The HD DVD rollout (hardware and software) does seem to be happening very slowly.

I picked up my HD-A1 from VE yesterday. It was made in May 2006, but I haven't checked the firmware version. It should be the same as the others.

This is not directed to you, but that information is absolutely not true. All fixes will be downloaded by the RJ45 broadband connection.

does anyone have a number for Toshiba, related to the HDA1? I've called their customer service, but they seemed clueless. I need to find out if/when they plan to ship more units to my local store. If anyone has a number I can call, it would be appreciated.

It would be better to call your local store to ask that question, not Toshiba. Who knows what distribution process your local store goes through to get their merchandise. I doubt Toshiba fully does.

My HD-XA1 just came back from service with new firmware (Version 1.2/1.09/2.0O) ! I'd sent it in for freezing & lockups. I'll be trying it later tonight and will report results.

Service guy said that public firmware disc release is eminent, not sure on Ethernet. Firmware adresses HD-DVD disc playability & HDMI connectivity issues, nothing specific unfortunately. Lets hope for the best!

BTW, my player has a build date of February.

I've been having a lot of trouble with SD DVD disks freezing because of minor scratches - the state of many NetFlix disks. Can you check to see if the firmware does anything about that? I'm on the verge of returning my player because of this. I really like it when it works, but find it seems to only play pristine disks.

Thanks,
Tim

Wow that is one fantastic bit of news. Could you time how fast the player boots with the new firmware?
