With Universal adding TrueHD soundtracks to ALL but one of their Oct (Edited :( ) 24 releases, does this mean that the rumoured 2.0 firmware (also rumoured to be will enable TrueHD) update will be released before that? :)

Update: An unconfirmed reports said that the said firmware update will be released on August 22, 2006 (next Tuesday).

Technical specs are impressive, too: in addition to the standard widescreen transfers and 1080p video, Universal has produced new Dolby TrueHD soundtracks for all of its October 24 releases except 'Spartacus,' which will be presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 only.

I suspect TruHD 5.1 will be available before the holidays, if Toshiba is smart. That way we can all go broke buying tons of holiday releases in TruHD 5.1.

The release date of those movies is October 24, not August 24. So, maybe not as soon as you think.

Nearly all releases to date have been in the 1080p format. That does not require 1080p output from the player. I believe that 1080p output from the Tosh would require a hardware update.

Most people are beginning to learn that on modern displays, it doesn't matter if 1080p movie content is transferred via 1080i or 1080p, the display is going to show all 1080 lines of resolution.

Now the TruHD 5.1 is definitely going to make a noticable difference and I hope the firmware update comes out before all these new releases are available.

It has been awhile since the 2.0 rummor started. Then it was confirmed. Still hasnt shown up. Now they are either having problems with it, or are just not in such a hurry with it as they were with the other bug fixes. Hopefully it is still comming soon and will be bug free.

I hope that this 2.0 update will come out very soon. I still have not upgraded my original firmware, since my player has been pretty much bug free.

I'd prefer they really take their time with it and solidly resolve as many issues as practical. Though still, would like to see it before November (with the TruHD 5.1 of course :)).

Even if they firmware enabled 1080p24 pass through, it wouldn't be any use to me. Really doubt they would though. Probably cause more confusion than anything else (most people would end up interpreting it as 1080p60 and then complain when it doesn't work).

You are correct that it could cause confusion but since the hardware is basically a PC it should be done. There could be an advanced settings menu with an easy "escape back to defaults" with lots of choices like 1080p 24Hz, 48Hz, 60Hz, and auto switching option.

Isn't TrueHD 7.1, or are they only encoding the DVDs with 5.1 audio right now?

I would hope they'd do 7.1 since hdmi is capable.

The only TRUE reason to enable 1080P on the HD DVD players is so the Blu-ray camp can't use that against HD DVD. Right now that is the BIG selling point of Blu-ray over HD DVD -- as ridiculous as it is. Take that away and there's really nothing Blu-ray can gloat about.

Just for THAT reason, the HD DVD folks should get 1080P enabled.

Given the different frame rate, seems like there's a good chance such a marketing driven strategy could blowup in Toshiba's face. Guess we'll see what happens.

You're saying you are not aware of a difference between a 24 frame per second rate and a sixty frame per second rate?

PS. I think you've just provided an example of how Toshiba could get into trouble.

There won't be. Ever, as long as we're talking about the current models.

There's nothing inside the current models to enable. The hardware simply isn't there, it does not exist. It can't be done.

Sheesh! I'm quite simply flabbergasted at the ignorance still displayed on this forum. Haven't you guys been reading the tech threads? Didn't you understand what was said? Hasn't this been covered a zillion times already?

You all know how Samsung BD-player does 1080p, right? The player's got the exact same Broadcom chip the Toshibas have - and the chip can't output 1080p60. (And the jury's still out on the 1080p24 passthrough.) Samsung got round this by adding a Genesis deinterlacing chip on the signal pathway which gets its input from the Broadcom, and outputs 1080p60.

There's no such deinterlacing chip in current HD DVD players, period. Ergo, it cannot be done, ever.

Toshiba has launched a HD DVD recorder in Japan. It's based on the same design as A1/XA1. It's got the same Broadcom chip. Yet the recorder outputs 1080p60. How? Because Toshiba added a deinterlacer chip (an ABT one) after the Broadcom chip. It's exactly the same solution used in Samsung's BD-player.

So please, get over it. A1/XA1 will never ever output 1080p60.

A 1080p24 passthru might be possible, but based on everything I've read about the subject, I think it's unlikely to happen.

Please, feel free to call me by my first name, Petri.

I hope this is true. But I'd love to see an official Toshiba release about this. Until then, I'm mildly considering all this "buzz."
