Didn't Sony refuse to allow BD technology to be licensed for use in a player that also played HD DVDs? Has this changed?

"IBTL" isn't cute, funny or original.

Also: you couldn't care less and purposes are NOT intensive. For all intents and purposes if you don't know these things, you probably shouldn't use them.

Waiting anxiously for a user review. If it's as good as the HD-A1, I will buy one and go dual-format. This is what I have been waiting to buy to replace my A1. Naysayers here said it would never happen.

WOW. I was definitely not expecting a universal player so soon, if it pans out that it really comes out during 1st quarter 2007, HD on optical media should thrive after all.

This is great news. Boy am I glad I purchased my A1 at Costco.

Let the floodgates open, more manufacturers and eventually all of them are sure to follow.

Yeah, this is great, . LG wants to cash in (for a while now), and will further take away potential Sony profits.

WOW I was just about to purchase the A2 or XA2 but now I might just wait a little bit to see what LG sez about the availability of the dual player.

Here is the full press release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LG ELECTRONICS TO LAUNCH FIRST DUAL-FORMAT HIGH-DEFINITION DISC PLAYER

SEOUL, KOREA, Jan. 4, 2007 - LG Electronics (LG), a leader in consumer electronics and mobile communications, announced that it will launch the world's first dual-format high-definition disc player, capable of playing both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD content. The unit will be released in the United States in early 2007. Details will be provided at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), held January 8-11 in Las Vegas.

LG expects this technological breakthrough to end the confusion and inconvenience of competing high-definition disc formats for both content producers and consumers.

Great news? Maybe. It's great in the short term, but dual format players do increase player production costs. At least dual format will force both formats to continue improving quality.

Thanks Euro but if I like what I hear from LG I will just wait for the dual format player. I was going to order from Robert of Value Electronics but I will now hold off until the LG announcemnt and how much it will be.

Yes the universal will most likely be more expensive than a one-format player at first, but no way other manufacturers will sit still, which will drive down costs quickly.

The first SACD/DVD-Audio player was not cheap, and that market never was more than a tiny blip on the radar, yet universal SACD/DVD-Audio players are now priced quite low. With the much bigger market awaiting HD-DVD/BD, prices will come down quick. I bet by the end of 2007, universal HD players will be pretty much all you can get anyway...

As for manufacturers denying something like this up to the very end, of course they will, otherwise they would kill the market before it even has any chance to be born...

Rob

It should be at least $800. I got this number because I averaged the sum of $1000 for the price of a blu-ray player and $600 for the price of a HD-DVD, all cost wise. Plus it will take a while (another 4 months?) for LG to deliver.

Even at a $1000 price point, I'm all for it.

The way prices go street-wise, you'll have it available for less than $800 street price less than 6 weeks after release... Once other manufacturers jump in (I take bets on Samsung and Lite-On being second and third to announce a universal), prices will start going down rather quickly.

Great news, this is really gonna shake up the market. To be honest i didn't expect a dual format player so soon. I have a feeling maybe bluray standalone sales have been cannibalized by ps3. So maybe standalone makers are looking to dual format angle, to boost consumer confidence and sales.

With a $299 price point expected to be announced for HD DVD by Tosh at CES and with Samsung announcing their second gen blu player will be 20% less than what the first gen Sammy was (is?) this is all great news for both formats. For very little cost we all can take out the format war in very short order so we can enjoy all the movies we want. Can't wait for CES this year. Bring it on!

No way it will have 2 separate drives, all the parts to build a single drive unit have been available to manufacturers for a little while now... Ricoh for the laser and Broadcom for the chipset I believe.

Why are there 2 Threads with the same name 1 in the Blu-Ray forum and 1 in the HD-DVD forum shouldn't these be merged it's getting confusing.

With NEC's chip and given the same laser you would only need one drive. Hopefully that will be the form.
