Looks like LG is serious to me

Last Watched 3D: Oz the Great and Powerful

It should be called Violet-Ray

CamMan, where did you hear that the XA2 is converting to interlaced and then to 1080p24? As far as I understand the XA2 have not yet implemented 1080p24 support, so your comment above must at best be speculation... !?

Thanks for the pictures!

I am still concerned that the HD DVD wording is all over this player. It is not a HD DVD compliant player. Although the trade marked logo is not present the wording is which implies it is a HD DVD player which implies it has all the workings of what you would expect from a HD DVD player.

If I was part of the HD DVD consortium I would have the lawyers firing on all cylinders. Of course this could of already been worked out that nobody knows about or there simply aren't any legal issues.

Very nice pics Phil. I agree that one could probably get separate players for the price of one...but that also adds to space issues and hookups. I presume with one HDMI to one's reciever etc....you're good to go for both formats. That alone is a cool thing.

It is expensive but if it takes off, more companies will follow, and studios will take notice.

Thanks for posting this Phil and for your efforts.

Good stuff Phil.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was....Club Timobi Wan-Episode II.

You'd get better bang for your buck if you picked up a X360 w/ HD-DVD and a PS3 over this.

I agree, I have a Tosh A1 already, but I really would like to have one dvd player that plays everything no switching back and forth between players, plus I find the ps3 to look really wanky in a home theatre rack(and no IR remote option)

LG might be in the clear since it doesn't appear to use the HD DVD logo. According to the US Patent and Trademark Office no claim is made on the use of "HD DVD"

There are quite a few HD upscaling players from crappy companies like Bush here in europe which call themselves HD DVD players. They cannot play HD DVD but since they do not use the logo it is OK (Although misleading and I suspect some are returned because of it).

that may be but I can still buy a A2 and a Samsung BD OR Philips BD for less than the price of this single player. It's still not a great option.

PS3 & A2 = Format Neutral

If this thing (or one like it) gets down to around $500-$600, I think it'll be a huge success, at least it would with me, I'd buy one in a second. Until then, as many have already pointed out, it makes no sense.

If this player was a Pioneer Elite, Denon, Onkyo, Marantz, etc, I'd have my checkbook out, but LG? They're supposed to offer products similar to higher priced alternatives for a lower price, not the other way around. Life's Good my a$$.

what is the max supported resolution for HD-DVD? Were you able to test upconversion?

I could care less for HDi but I'd get this player for $800 if it were that price.

I like the look of the interface (shown above). If this thing outputs good then it might be interesting, especially when discounts swing into gear.

The player itself seems to look about as good as anything yet available. I wonder if it upscales DVDs as good as my A2? I kinda doubt it. No iHD (ouch); but 1080p.

Also, 27MHz/8-bit video digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion and 96kHz/24-bit audio digital-to-analog (D/A) conversion doesn't sound too impressive.

IMO, at this price point there are higher quality, more versatile options available, even if two players are required...

Combo is doomed to quick death.
China HD-DVD players coming soon will finish the job.
But wait there is a bright side,Sony plus the puny 8 will need diversion from their fated death throes.

We've been hearing about the wonderful low cost Chinese HD players now for a year. It would've been nice if at least a prototype of the MS/Broadcom design could be shown off at CES but it didn't happen.

I think a fairer assessment would be that we "may" see Chinese players at low pricepoints in the stores in time for the holidays.

"may".

Cool. Someone should start an owners thread. I have one now. Doubtful it will stay, but I'm happy to answer any questions. I have not tried the LG with SD or BD yet, just HD DVD.

I see that it outputs 1080p. Anyone care to comment on how the 1080p output looks? Is there even anyone who owns a 1080p display and an LG unit yet?

It says HD DVD on the player and box, but cannot use the official HD DVD logo.

I have no way to utilize the 1080p output of the LG so I cannot comment on that performance.

I have to agree I'm surprised the lawyers are not all over it already. I don't see how it couldn't have legal issues even without the stylized logo. You couldn't get away with opening a store named "Target" but skip the bullseye logo. etc.....

Buckle up and hold my beer I wanna try somethin'

Yeah, it's expensive, and it's borked for HD DVD, but you have to give LG credit for getting it out so quickly after its announcement at least.

Heck Ill even beat that. I already own a xbox 360.

HDDVD add on - $200

PS3-$350

Both formats covered plus both gaming consoles covered. I would do this in a heartbeat over buying a $1200 half gimped dual foramt player.

How did you get a PS3 for $350?

And no, the 360 HD DVD is not $200, considering you have to have a 360 first. It's just easier to spend the extra money to get the HD DVD add-on if you already have the 360, but many people getting the LG won't have the 360 already.
