I got my taxmas money today, I had decided to buy an Hd A2 and a ps3, but, i decided against the ps3 and put that money towards my hd dvd collection. I have about 20 titles on order plus my form for the free 3.

you really think now was a good time to invest in HDDVD over Blu-Ray?
To each his own I guess.

Remember, the upconversion is so good on these, that you shouldn't notice the difference between sd-dvd upconverted and blu-ray.

Good job man! There is no real world advantage with blu ray technology when it comes to movies.

If more people like you come on board, eventually studios can't ignore that.

I'm not one to laugh out loud. But really, that was great.

Haha.

More content (COUGH) does not equal better content.
Better movies (COUGH) equal better content.
Awesome PQ/AQ are just bonuses.

Hey what titles did you order? Frankly I wouldn't worry about HD DVD or Blu-ray dying. This battle "will" end in a stalemate, every battle with digital products has ended in hybrid products. We're talking ones and zeroes here.

Most of us supporting HD DVD know that eventually the content will round out and our players are region free so we can do the import thingy for special movies. I wouldn't rule out getting a BD player either but right now I'm going to support HD DVD and get some studios to take notice. Competition is always good.

Buy 20 HD DVDs? Put that $500 in the stock market and get a Net Flix acct for $10/month - then you get movies and interest.....The market is on a roll!

Who said upconversion is as good as HD (Blu Ray)..Time for a new system..

Yeah, I hope they were joking. I'm getting so tired of hearing that rationale that upconverted DVDs look HD (which could not be further from the truth) so there is no need for the Blu-Ray exclusive titles.

With that rationale, everyone can save themselves some money and keep buying standard DVDs. If the upconversion is so great, there's no need for HD-DVD, either.

Time to trade up from the PS3. I guess the 360 can be considered a combo player. It upconverts and can play HD-DVD's.

HD-DVD: 115 Blu: 6
Latest HD-DVD: All of them at Frys for under $10.

Latest BD: No incentive to pick up discs now that the format war is over. Netflix via xbox and mail is more that sufficient.

i saved my tax money to buy two tickets on the Titanic and an emergency personal lifeboat, but i decided to skip the lifeboat and buy three tickets instead.

Blu-ray discs - 154
HD-DVD - 0

FACT: 90% of the industry is blu-ray, few are hd-dvd.

FACT: Paramount paid 150m, sabotage by MS.

FACT: consumers have spoken, they chose blu-ray over 2-1.

While I cannot comment on the A2 or XA2's upconversion of SD's (Haven't watched one on the A2 yet), I can tell you it is amazing how a video processor such as the Anthem AVM50/D2 or DVDO's transforms SD images. Honestly I kind of feel cheated with HD content because I got so use to SD's being processed through the Anthem AVM50. HD wasn't as big of an improvement as I expected.

Now with that being said there is definitely a difference. The difference is big enough for me to start collecting HD-DVD's vs SD's. At the same time, having a video processor allows me the option of buying SD DVD's for the titles which HD-DVD hasn't pursuaded YET! And we all know, that means my money doesn't directly go towards the BD format.

Another point I must make, my TV doesn't support 1080i natively, and doesn't even support 1080p. So I feed 720p into it. My hope is I am missing out on a lot from that jump to 1080p. Figure next spring-summer we will replace the existing one hopefully with a 70" Plasma which will have 1080p 120fps. (I can dream right?)

Cheers!

Darrell

I bought an HD-XA2 last week. the upconversion is unbeatable.
I watched the Guardian on my Denon 2910 few days before I got my HD player, then I watched it again on the XA2 and was like WOW, like Night and Day.
Nobody says that the SDDVD's are being converted to HD, but it sure gives you that feeling.
I also watched Flyboys and compared between the 2 players with same results.

I was tempting to get a Blu-Ray player.
The XA2 has stopped that process.

HD DVD Titles=89
BD Titles=84
DVD Titles=205

Congratulations! I have had my A2 about a week. I have only watched a few DVD's on it and my first HD DVD, (The Italian Job) came in yesterday so I took a peek at a few minutes of it today.

If Blu Ray wins the format war tomorrow I still am glad I made my purchase because the upconversion the A2 does on regular DVD's is amazing.

I already had my PS3, since Nov 17th. I just received my Denon 2307 yesterday, and my HD-A2 should be here next week. Lossless audio, single cable connection all the way around. I love it!

The XA2 has stopped that process.

Some of us would compare to Flyboys on Blu-ray before deciding that upconversion was good enough (which we then wouldn't ).

Good move I say it really all about what you want. Both formats are pretty equal in terms of PQ and AQ. Its all about what you want. The movies, upconversion

I think I will be happy with my purchase. I went over and over my budget. I had a diy screen that I kept trying to be content with, but, I just never got there so I needed to remedy that, even if it meant one less player in the rack.

As for what movies,

Off the top of my head

Backdraft, fast and furious, goodfella's, dukes of hazard, u-571, tomb raider, blazing saddles, king kong, the departed, chronos, posidion, willy wonka, heart, eagles and a few others that I cant think of right now.

I had a hard time telling Grand Prix apart from its SD version on my 360 add-on. It was a combo disc and I kept flipping the disc over to see the differences and there aren't to many. I think what he said is true as far as restored movies such as Gran Prix and those new Bond transfers. Older SD material doesn't come close.

I think you really should think about trying the Netflix (or Blockbuster) route if you are in the US. With this thing being new you might want to go through a lot of movies and it is a great way to get to see a lot of them for a budget. I even get some just to look at and then send back without watching the whole movie. I still buy movies that I know I will want to keep (and even some that I won't keep), but the rental thing has been great for getting to see a lot of stuff. Since you are looking for stuff that has been around a while you probably wouldn't have a hard time getting many of them (the new movies tend to be harder to get).

Actually you're the one who needs a new system, especially after reporting in another thread that you couldn't see the difference between an A2 and a XA2.
