Now, I got the A3 last week at Best Buy for $199 with the movie deal. I wanted to upgrade to a standalone with TrueHD support to get the most out of my 1.3 receiver, and have HDMI connectivity vs. component on the 360.
I first upgraded the firmware to 1.1 via ethernet, which felt like I was on a 56k connection. Next, I popped in Knocked Up, which was one of the movies I got with the deal. Played fine, no skips or anything.
Next day I put in Spy Game, which I got from Netflix. I noticed a few scratches on the disc, nothing too bad. Played fine til the last scene, at which point it froze up and came up with the great 408bc504 error. I take out the disc, clean it, goto that scene and freezes up at the same spot. I put it in the 360 drive, goto that scene, and plays through it fine, no skips, jumps or anything. This kinda pissed me off, cause if I didn't have the 360 drive, I wouldn't know how the movie ended.
Yesterday I put in Hulk, which I got from Netflix also. There were a few scratches on the disc, about the same as Spy Game. I get about half way in the movie, freezes, 408bc504. I take it out clean it again just to make sure, try it again, same problem. Now I try it in the 360 drive, plays fine, no skips/freezes.
Now after looking up the error code on these forums, I see this is a common problem. Which is between problems with the production of the discs, and problems with the player's ability to do error correction while reading the disc. One member posted in one of the many threads on this code that it could be the laser is out of alignment. So I exchanged it at Best Buy today, just to make sure, and rule out that its not a defective player. After I got the new A3 setup, I left the firmware at v1.0, and put the Hulk in. I went back to the scene where it froze last time, and again it froze up and 408bc504 came up.
I'm not sure what to do now. Should I keep this player I can't use, and hope that a firmware update comes out soon and hopefully fixes this issue. I'm not sure I can return it since I've already opened the movies that were included with the promotion. This is a third generation player which shouldn't have these issues. Another thing on the 3rd generation is the start up time, which really doesn't bother me much. But when I think this is a THIRD generation player, what the hell is this thing doing? Contacting the damn space station? Start up time should have gone down somewhat.
Has anyone returned their A3 just for the 408bc504 issue? How often has Toshbia released firmware updates for their 2nd generation players? Should we expect an update for the 3rd generation players by the end of this month?
