That may imply it may be marketed as a future proof upconverting replacement for a DVD player that also plays HD DVDs on a HDTV?

That's the kind of forward thinking you expect when a format wants to replace another. Now this is more like it. I agree with your summations.

Robert,

Toshiba.ca says the HD-A20 will upconvert SD DVD to 720p/1080i/1080p over HDMI (still only 480i/480p via component, as expected).

Can you verify, confirm, or deny 1080p SD upconversion via HDMI or are you intentionally and explicity excluding 1080p upscaling on the A20?

I'd trust Toshiba over a sales website. A Best Buy magazine here said "Toshiba HD-A2... 720p..."

They didn't even mention 1080i. The HD-A20 probably upscales to 1080p

1080p upscaling could be an upgrade discriminator for me... I'm considering going from A1 (purchased from VE) to the upcoming A20.

Robert receives information a little earlier than us consumers. Now I'm curious as to whether this specific feature was recently added (after Robert copied/pasted the preliminary info into his website).

The toshiba.ca website also says the A20 has a "Glow Remote Control"... I hope this means backlit. This is also a significant A1-A20 upgrade factor for me, but this feature is oddly missing from VE's site.

I should probably look for the A20 thread.

I think that's just when the newer prices are applied but the unit is available on the 4th, at least at Value Electronics.

They just need to get rid of the zebra stripe and make the whole damn thing either black, or white, or silver/grey. Otherwise it looks stupid like some boob spray painted part of it.

Interesting that you would bother to post on this. Your second comment about the missing HD DVD logo on the BH100 proves the point -- it is not a compliant HD DVD player with the rights to use the logo. No HDi and it does not meet the audio codec mandatory requirements. So at the January CES show LG had the HD DVD logo on the top cover of the player. Seems like that was quickly corrected.

Glad you are here. I have a question or two or three. Will the Panasonic and Pioneer EVER play the new audio codecs-specifically DTS Master Audio? Do you have any insight whether studios will continue to use lossless PCM if they can use DTS Master Audio instead? And if they do does that mean no lossless audio for 1G BD player owners? Interested owner as I own both the Panasonic BD player and the XA2.

Before the forum goes amok with that. Note the adverb

..."Hopefully".

As in "We'd like this to be about $100".

Even if it's $150 or $200 it will probably sell like hotcakes.

At $100 I will be buying two. At $149 or $199 I think a lot of people myself included would jump off the fence. This is the perfect price for the next tier of adopters and matched with the new content coming out in addition to some of the really good catalog movies what the heck. My DVD changer though could be religated to a CD and SACD player. Unless of course Sony comes out with a $300 blu-ray mega changer.

It just looks expensive!

I really don't know, nor could I answer if I did, at least until it's disclosed by those companies.

The only disadvantage to LPCM is it takes more space, but with 50GB space isn't currently an issue for the vast majority of titles. Also there are no DTS royalties associated with LPCM, so that's an additional benefit. Perhaps one day if/when the majority of Blu-ray players support advanced lossless codecs studios will drop LPCM, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

If these do come out for under $200, I will replace all my current DVD players (and probably buy them as Christmas presents for my parents, sister, etc). They will be the same cost as DVD players with the added bonus of HD DVD!!!

Not bad for a $200-$300 player.
