Finally, a nice sized picture.

It's also known as the Alco SHD7000.

Looks like no DTS support though?

Are you just speculating on the $199 price tag by it's looks or is there something I am missing?

I also notice no advertised support for next generation audio codecs. not even DD+.

It should be called Violet-Ray

No problam man, I wasn't really calling you out, you did put a question mark in the title. I was just seeing if there was more information on this player that you were privy too.

NP.. It does look kinda Bare-Bones. Only offering Dolby Digital hence my speculation of the player being $199.00 ala the HD-DVD Add-On for the 360

LOL. It does look "sparse." But hey, "sub $199 players" need to start somewhere. It will be interesting to see the selling price of this player. It does have a clean minimalist look.

DD+ and TrueHD are mandatory in all HD DVD players.

It does DVD upscaling over HDMI unlike the most popular blu-ray player.

And it can play CD's.

Apparently no DTS support although the new Sony $500 player due this summer can't playback lossless in either Dolby or DTS.

Not bad for a $200-$300 player.

I am aware of that.... that is why I questioned it's apparent lack of an audio decoder.

MSRP this at $299 and come Xmas put it on sale for $249 and I'll buy one for my mother. I don't care that it's a no frills exterior. If it works fine and deliveres HD DVD quality on the movies then I'm in.

Nor the current 1G standalone BD players. They will not be firmware upgradeable to the newer DTS Master codex. Unfortunate since some BDs (Fox) use this codex and DO NOT include lossless PCM that everyone is raving about. I know, I own the Panasonic. I understand that the Sony PS3 will be upgradeable...are we surprised?

"And it can play CD's."

Omigod - I just realized I don't know if the Toshiba's play CD's - do they?

Also, isn't the 5 free movies only when purchased from certain sellers? I thought Toshiba was offering 3.

Well my A1 plays cd's great!

They also Play DVD +R's! Well almost all of them but I only use single layer.

I have also tried MP3 cd's with over 100 songs and it plays them all great!

All the more reason for the studios to release HD DVD movies with uncompressed audio so that you won't need all those codecs and thus reduce the cost of the player and to get those 51 gb disks out as well.

Sorry I read quite a bit. Codex and Codec sound so similar and are spelled nearly the same, when I type the x and the c are soooo close together. Believe it or not codex really is a word.

Now if Toshiba and Msoft were to make a statement that this player would replace DVD because they would be sub $200 and play HD DVDs and DVDs alike, this would actually be a relevant argument.

Looks like what a HD DVD player for the masses should. This is one not built for us the audio/video phile. Most people don't have HD TVs and fewer have surround systems. Another good point is this player shouldn't canabalize the market for the tosh and higher end players coming on board.

My review comparisons of Energy RC-70s to Veritas V6.3 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...8#post21199418

Stylistically I would drop the vanilla faceplate. Still think it is minimalist, which is good.
