No but you can get true HD in 5.1...Most Movies are recorded in 5.1 at the present, thats why...not your receivers fault.

Bull1962 is correct. If you don't eat your six meats (5.1) you can't have any eght (7.1) puddings? How do you expect to eat your eight puddings (7.1) if you don't eat your six (5.1) meats

5.1 does not equal 7.1

Ok..maybe i asked the wrong question... will i be able to use Cinema DSP..etc to send sound to all my speakers.. or matrix it somehow if i use HDMI..
with my analog setup im unable to get these options on my 6.1 setup.

sorry about confusing anyone..

i was not clear in my question, but i do understand how its impossible to get 7.1, from 5.1..

just when i use my optical input from my 360 im able to matrix the sound so it plays thru my rear surround making use of all 6 speakers
even if track is produced in 5.1

I dont believe you can use PL II or any other decoder while playing a HD disc thru HDMI...The sound is transfered as multi channel PCM thru your receiver. The True HD Lossless formats sound great in 5.1 in my opinion. You can use an optical cable for 7.1 audio but that would be a step in the wrong direction if you ask me...especially if watching BD or HDDVD movies.

I agree True HD in 5.1 is great but i just spent i pretty penny for a new HT setup and just wanted to get full use out of it.. kinda pointless to have 7 speakers and only use 5.. and a 7.1 one receiver and only getting 5.1 use from it....
but i understand what your saying 5.1 true hd is amazing..

thanks for your input

With a 5.1 multichannel linear PCM input many AVRs can apply Dolby Pro Logic IIx to drive the back surrounds of a 7.1 system with audio decoded from the side surrounds. This normally requires a particular manual forcing on operation. The EXTD SUR. button on a Yamaha AVR's remote control lets you cycle through various back channel decode options.
