The A20 is reported as "in stock" and shipping at Amazon LINK HERE and at VE LINK HERE .

I don't see a thread for 1st end users reporting yet.

Who is going to be the first user to post?

With A2 prices down to $299, the uptake for this player will most likely be slow until it comes down another $50 or so. Just IMHO.

Well looks like I'm first, and my initial impressions are quite positive:

Load times are FAST. I only owned the Xbox 360 drive before and this player loads much faster. On a couple of the HD-DVDs I threw in, there was hardly any difference between them and standard DVD starting up! Menus, navigation, everything was very simple and easy to use. My ENEMY OF THE GATES also ran flawlessly, and I checked out several other HD discs, all looked great.

The upconverting looks very good as well. I also have the Oppo 981 and IMO the upconversion (which does do 1080p) compares favorably on the few discs I tested -- and there's no macroblocking on my display with the A20 either. (As with all other HD-DVD players, I believe, PAL discs won't play, even Region 0 ones).

Sound is good, but I'm running the optical out (DTS downmix) so I'm probably not the best gauge of its capabilities.

Overall I'm happy, if a bit disappointed with the box having been beaten up (VE's first shipment of these weren't double-boxed), with no glitches or playback errors I can tell so far...but I'll leave it to the experts to compare it with the 1st gen machines, which I didn't use.

cheers!

Does it have the option for 480i in the setup menu for HDMI? Does the remote have a v-out button like the A1 had?

yes it does

negative on that. That's my only major gripe from my angle, that there's no "Zoom" function to zoom in for non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs.

Thanks,

hi vinodk, I wrote back a little bit before that I think it upconverts VERY well from what I've sampled from about a half-dozen discs. Very warm colors, no macroblocking -- I also have an Oppo 981 and I'd say it's roughly on par with that from what I've seen (no macroblocking b/c no Faroudja chip). I have a Samsung 50' DLP that I'm watching all of this on.

Alas I don't own any other HD-DVD players so I can't compare them with this, but I think it's just as capable as the Oppo and that's a pretty strong player. Certainly it looks miles, leagues better in upconverting than my Philips Blu Ray machine BDP-9000.

My XA2 came double boxed from VE and both boxes were pretty beat up by FEDEX Ground. But the insides of the Toshiba box seem to protect it pretty well. I think some bubble wrap inside the outer box would be a good idea. I figure it would add about $2-$3 bucks to the cost but would be money well spent in the feeling the customer gets when it is first opened.

Thanks for the reply. I am also planning to pair it with Sammy 50" 1080p dlp. Does it have an option for 1080p24 output?

I didn't see any mention of the 24 anywhere, so I'm guessing not.

Robert's price is $449, which with all the free discs and the cable (which he said was shipped Thursday) is the best deal going. Plus his service is impeccable, I PM'd him about the original charge (it was $499 when I placed the order), and he's taken care of it already.

I stand corrected. However that doesn't include shipping (which takes it to $439) or the two free discs from the $449 promo though.

Glad everything worked out for you. Robert will take care of any issues you might incur when placing an order through VE. He did it for me, too, back when I bought my A2.

Thanks Crow. I've seen it first hand here and have been very satisfied -- will use VE again for sure!

My A20 seems to have trouble with the HDMI connection and HDCP.

If I plug the A20 into my Bravia XBR2 and change the input, the player shuts off and claims it has to change the video mode. I have other HDCP devices that don't have this problem with this TV.

This is really annoying because it takes a few minutes to get through the crap you cannot skip on every DVD and back to the place you were, if you were fortunate enough to remember it.

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Do other Toshiba HD-DVD players have this problem?

Do I need to send this player back?

It would also be nice to know if there are any issues with hdmi to dvi connection, and if it has a good 720p output for hd dvds.

Any brave souls willing to open up their player and post pictures of the inerts? Mainly what chipset does the A20 use? Is it Silicon Optix HQV Reon (unlikely)? Is it proprietary Tosh. chipset (likely)?

No 1080P 24? And people are buying this? WOW!

I think 1080P 24 is THE most important thing to MANY MANY people. Motion judder should be a thing of the past & if they released this player without it they won't sell as many as they would have..too bad, more waiting now argh!

Cheers

The max output of the A2 is 1080i and the max output of the A20 is 1080p. The Xa2 is also 1080p, but uses the Silicon Optix Reon processor.

The real question is the A20 the first HD DVD player to output TRUE 1080p rather than interlacing the original signal and then de-interlacing it as the XA2 does?

I didn't know that Samsung DLP TVs accepted 1080/24 signals.

Chris just how many people do you think have 120hz HDTV? Or at least 48/72hz? I keep reading about people making a big issue out of 24p output but if I'm not planning to upgrade my monitor then what's the point? Sounds a lot like the HDMI 1.3 hype.

If you have a HDTV that support 48/72/120hz then by all means its an important features but for the rest of us 60hz only users 24p doesn't mean jack squat until we upgrade. I'm assuming that you have or will be buying a 120Hz capable HDTV but I cannot assume that others will.
