I never said that Blu-Ray wasn't HD. I said add -DVD to the end of it, because THAT is the only format that will matter in 1 yrs time. I just have issues with Blu-Ray trolls over here causing and spreading FUD. If you have nothing concerning HD-DVD, go back over there and tell them how a cheap Blu-Ray player is coming out for Wal-Mart, that way they can hold their breath. I checked all your posts, and guess what, defense of Blurry-Ray.
Back on topic.

Keep the personal comments out of this discussion, please. It just takes away any credibility and respect when someone like that argues a point.

Videobusiness now quotes AVS Forum!

Quote:

Wal-Mart apparently has ordered 2 million HD DVD players from China to sell at a target price of $299, according to a report out of Taiwan.

The introduction of low-priced Chinese-manufactured DVD players in Wal-Mart and other outlets in the U.S. helped spur the growth of the DVD format in its early years.

A translation of the story was uploaded on the AVS Forum.

I think what you fail to realize that TDK doesn't just make discs. They make laser assemblies, power supplies, transformers, rubber magnets, HDD magnetic heads, HDMI filters, inverters, etc. If they supply any of these for a HD-DVD player, then they are involved in HD-DVD.

Ill take that same bet on those terms

The picture in the article shows some guy holding a drive mechanism. I expect we won't know more until the design is finalized (4-12 weeks) and the player goes into initial production (12-16 weeks).

I would expect we are looking at a simple drive with a broadcom IC board, etc, pretty much what they announced at CES would be coming from China as a low cost weapon.

Unless the thing is a total dog that can't boot in 30 seconds and has major reader problems (a.k.a, Tosh A1), it should do pretty well at retail. I expect Wal-Mart will sell a crap load of them.

OK, I'm confused. Elsewhere, BD fans are celebrating that the article is about BLU-RAY PLAYERS. That the original translation was wrong. So someone's wrong and somebody's got to lose.

Has this been CONFIRMED to be for HD DVD?

Dude, Walmart has supported HD DVD from the start.
Walmart is the only store that Toshiba created a rebadged HD-A1 (HD-D1, black box) for. They have being carrying HD DVD players and even displaying them in their stores from HD DVD's inception.

Your denial and desire to ignore the obvious is quite hilarious at best.

This is the reason the BDA tried so desperately to convince the world that Blu-Ray had won umpteen times. There's no doubt ALL the exclusive BD companies are now pissing in their respective pants. They had a small window of opportunity and failed to put the hammer down. Of course, they have themselves to blame with the expensive hardware and their recurring delays (launch, PQ on discs, BD50's, BD-J), but Toshiba and the HD-DVD format have proven resilient foes with fewer resources.

There is NO WAY Disney, Fox, MGM or LG continue to back BD exclusively if Wal-Mart starts selling millions of HD-DVD players. It just can't happen! Their shareholders would crucify them if they ignored a market of that size. I predict a quick domino effect towards neutrality if these players sell briskly at Wally World...no doubt in my mind.

I'd be very shocked if the Fox hold back is strictly anything but BD+/DRM related.

Yes, people follow you mother's advice and ignore the snyping, there are many who have figured out that they can get a thread yanked by getting people to fight. Steer clear of it.

It is starting to look like HD DVD is what is being bought by Walmart, but true or not that doesn't mean there wont be budget BD in the future either.

One of the reasons I suspect this is HD DVD being talked about, is because it just makes more sense as BD is still ironing out their next generation specs, which makes this seem a little early for a BD sell-through.

That said I hope the price isn't truly going to be $299, that's too high for a no-name when Toshiba in all probability will hit that price marker at the same time.

I suppose Walmart could get more profit on a player they get at a lower wholesale than Toshiba's players; my guess is that if we are talking HD DVD, that Walmart will find out that they gotta go $199 before long.

Now we've got some great spin coming in fast and furious from the spin masters themselves. I love this place. First - they've got to be Blu-Ray players and if not, well then they're going to stink! Man oh man, where else can you find stuff like this? Only here I guess!

Thanks, and keep it coming
