Since our main thread got shut down, I'm starting a new thread to monitor news on the upcoming update for the Xbox 360 add-on player.

Link to closed closed thread

So far, it looks like the general Dashboard Update is coming this week:
http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2...-news-7-7.aspx
This update will add a black level adjustment setting when using the VGA output.

The HD-DVD add-on update should fix a lot of compatibility issues, as well as add an option to turn on/off Dynamic Range Compression for DD+, and the option to output hi-res audio as DTS rather than DD.

Please post news, updates and speculation here, not complaints about MS. That already got at least one other thread closed.

Looks like the other thread was re-opened.

Anyway, here's what's coming in the Dashboard update, before the HD-DVD add-on update hits:

Beginning the week of May 7, users of Windows Live Messenger on Xbox 360 can text chat using the virtual keyboard accessible on Xbox 360, or by connecting a USB keyboard to the console. This summer Microsoft will launch a QWERTY text-input device, a new accessory that will connect directly into the Xbox 360 controller to support text and instant messaging.

Other New Features
Beyond Windows Live Messenger, the Spring Update for Xbox 360 includes hundreds of new features and enhancements including:

* A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.
* Enhanced family settings features for Xbox LIVE communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
* A new Xbox LIVE Marketplace blade lets Xbox LIVE members access the content they seekwhether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States)from one place on Xbox LIVE.
* Updates to Xbox LIVE Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox LIVE Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox LIVE members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
* Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
* A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox LIVE Arcade games.
* New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
* Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

The Spring Update is free beginning the week of May 7 and will be easily accessible to every Xbox 360 owner through Xbox LIVE or on Xbox.com.

You may not even notice all the new features, but they are all designed to enhance your Xbox LIVE experience. Some of the other features in this upgrade include:

* The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.
* When the user is in the dashboard and an Xbox 360 game is in the console then the name of the game is displayed in the tray icon of the dashboard. If the user highlights the tray icon then achievements and gamer score are displayed for that game based on the signed in user. Xbox1 games show the name and image of the game.
* Integrated support for the new Xbox 360 text input device. Note that this device includes a new wired headset.
* Playback progress bar indicates download completion.
* Switchable aspect ratio now available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).
* Player and friends lists now quickly show session presence information for quick identification of users that are joinable.
* Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.
* Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC.
* Show folder hierarchy for video content played from all devices.
* Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays remembering the users last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio that the user choose for that file.
* Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.
* Skip forward and backward functionality has been improved to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 chapters allowing you to quickly skip around video content.
* The information bar that is turned on via the On Screen Display (OSD) now shows you exactly where you are in the playback of the video file. In addition it will also show for Video Marketplace content how much of the file has been downloaded and where the chapters exist in the file.
* Windows Media protected content (WM-DRM) can now be streamed from the PC to the console. If the WM-DRM license is missing or corrupted then a specific error message is displayed to the user. Bookmarking is also stored for protected content.
* When a user selects an item for download from Marketplace then the system will determine if there is sufficient disk space for the item and, if not, will ask the user to delete content on the HDD. The system provides a sorted by size list of videos, game trailers, demos and arcade content to aid the user in the deletion process. The same list of items are also available from within memory so that users can quickly see which items are consuming the most disk space.
* The console will block the user who attempts to download content onto a storage device that will never have the capacity to store the item without deducting any points associated with the content item.
* The screensaver is disabled when playing photos from any source

Per Amir, they are two separate updates that are being released very close to each other.

So, if the two are being released separately anyway, why did they have to wait for the Dashboard update to get the HD-DVD update out?

Not complaining...just wondering.

I would imagine part of the reason is so people didn't get the HD-DVD update first and think that it was the Spring Dashboard Update. I can only imagine what their support line would be like if that happened, especially considering how honked off people are because they thought the update was coming out yesterday. Even though it's clearly stated at xbox.com that it's the week of the 7th.

Love me some HD

I don't think they "had to" wait. I think they just ended up finishing around the same time. The HD-DVD update includes a few functionality upgrades (night mode toggle option, conversion to DTS for output), plus the lip sync fix and a lot of compatibility issue fixes for disc read errors, and subtitle issues, and audio issues.

Thats cool, I thought they were tied together, but as long as we get them soon, I have no problem. I assume that the HDDVD update is probably built on top of the new dashboard version (cant update the HDDVD firmware, then update the 360 firmware and expect the HDDVD to still work).

I also wonder if there are any stealth updates to the dashboard that we will see in the next few months. I know last time we got the update and it was a month later before the video marketplace showed up.

Fall update should be huge.. IPTV and Clan support.

I clearly remember Amir saying that the HD-DVD update was complete a long time ago (the DTS update anyway) but they couldn't release it because they had to wait for the Dashboard update.

The updates are completely separate now. FWIW, the HD DVD update supposedly includes quite a bit of stuff. Of particular interest to me are of course the DD+ dynamics fix and the audio synchronization fix, as well as compatibility fixes for specific disks such as for the HDScape sampler disc.

In fact, the fact that the Dashboard update and HD DVD update are separate might mean we'll have to wait a little longer. ie. Because of potential bandwidth constraints, the Dashboard update will likely be this week, but the HD DVD update may not come until next week or so.

--

P.S. One thing in terms of movie playback I am interested in is actually in the Dashboard update: It will include 1080p H.264 MPEG4 support. Cool.

If it requires the Dashboard to be updated first it before the HD DVD drive it sounds like it will not be possible to update the HD DVD drive that is attached to a PC rather than an XBOX 360 console. Or is this HD DVD update not firmware for the drive but software update for XBOX360's player?

Microsoft does not support the HD DVD drive on a PC. However, it should be noted that most of the problems have nothing to do with the drive itself.

Ah then it will be just an update to the console not the separate HD DVD drive so PC users do not have to worry about it, good to know.

I wouldn't say that either. It's possible the drive does need some updates too, I'm not sure.

Only those who using it with PowerDVD or whatever can tell us. From what I understand though, most of them haven't been having significant issues with the drive itself.

Does anyone know if the compatibility will be improved with the combos that people are currently having trouble with? I'm on my second copy of Smokin' Aces and it won't work. My second copy of Children of Men will actually play this time, but I haven't been able to watch it all the way through yet.

HD DVD - 60
Blu-Ray - Lost Count

Dunno about every disc, but many of the problems with some of these discs is likely due to poor QA during their manufacturing. In other words, these discs that don't work on the Xbox 360 also may not work on Toshibas, and it's not a player compatibility issue but a disc manufacturing issue.

For this reason, Universal has started an HD DVD replacement program for some discs.

It was rolled into the bigger HD DVD update which does a whole bunch of other stuff too. It didn't have to wait for the dashboard update, but has coincidentally ended up doing that.

Unless the firmware itself on the drive is getting an upgarde, for HTPC using powerdvd the drive is just a drive. Nothing more and thus wouldn't require it.

Wonder if that applies to HD DVDs... That would be great news for us CIH-rs.

There is a Dashboard update and an HD DVD update. "HD-DVD dash update" is kind of confusing. If you do indeed mean HD DVD update, cyberbri is probably correct as far as we know. Maybe next week for the HD DVD update. (The Dashboard update is probably this week.)

I doubt it. IIRC, one of the MS guys said they don't support the drive working on a PC, but they will do nothing to prevent it.

Yes, I agree. I was just suggesting that I don't know if some of the compatibility issues for example could require a drive update or not. Probably not, but I can't say for sure.

Major Nelson just reported that the dash update should be out by tomorrow...it sure would be nice to get the HD DVD update 1st, since we've been waiting forever....I could care less about IMing on the 360, but the MPEG4/H.264 additions sound interesting...well, back to waiting, hopefully no more than a couple days from now...I guess we'll see...

Video of 360 HD DVD audio lag - 3 scenes from 2 HD DVDs demonstrating the problem (with DD+).

(Quicktime H.264 800 Kbps, 30 sec, 3 MB - Sorry for the poor quality.)

I'm using VGA so I'm curious what effect the "improvements" will have on the video quality, namely up-converting of standard dvd's (if any).

Hunter,

how is your picture quality with VGA? If you're still using it, I'm assuming it's fine. It's fine for me too, on my Samsung DLP (HLN series). But for some people the picture quality is noticeably sub-par with VGA compared to component, so the addition of a black level switch for VGA should resolve issues for those people.

Spring Update is released. One down, one more to go.

Format neutral! (prefering HD DVD which is build on quality while blu-ray is build on marketing)
