For DVDs it is only for commercial discs without protection, which is why almost all require HDMI for upscaling.

For HD-DVDs, no studio so far has put protection on their releases, so oddly enough, HD-DVDs can be played via component. This may change come 2009-2010, some speculate.

This is awesome news. I have the D2 from Costo for less than a month, but I've been watching the A20 and XA2 prices on Amazon for the best time to upgrade and just return this to Costco since I basically have forever to decide. There have already been a few times when I could've ordered the A20 for about what I paid for the D2 (with tax). Now I can hold out for XA2! Yippee!

I bet the HD players won't be available at wonderful prices during the $100 off promotion. Amazon will probably sell XA2's above $600, at least.

If I wasn't into home theater, I'd have a whole lotta money.

Robert has aleady announced he will be in on this deal, and he sells the X-A2 for $579 delivered now. I seriously doubt he would try to escalate the price for this event. I believe he is too honest for that.

Lowering prices like that - by more than a half - they must be really desperate as well.

This really isn't anything new. How long ago has it been that Sony announced that it was going to release a $599 player? What I find interesting is that I don't believe these players (the Panasonic or Sony) will be compliant with what they will offer come late fall (just my opinion.) Toshiba and any derivatives come late fall will be (they have to be to be within spec.)

The XA2 usually goes for <$600 w/o the $100 off promotion. Even with just the $100 off the MSRP the $299 HD-A2 is an attractive offer.

Wow that weird. I went to Amazon to check the latest X-A2 price. It would not show me the X-a2 only the A-2. I could get there via the Eproduct wars website, but not on Amazon directly. What up with that? Someone else please try.

Yeah, but that's from Electronics Expo.

Amazon.com itself was selling it today for $320.

I posted a short while back that this model was showing up in my local Costco's computer system as "A2" rather than "D2", so no problem there. My guess is that even if other Costco's call it a D2 they would honor the rebate since it is the same machine with a different stock number.

I think the best deal may lie at best buy...
According to another thread here, from 5/20-5/26, the A2 is being sold for $299, with 2 free movies with a purchase of the Matrix trilogy. Now, if this promotion is combined with the sale, you can potentially get the whole bundle at about $300. What is most important is whether or not the best buy sale had already accounted for the instant rebate, or whether the $299 price tag is a separate deal. Does this make sense?
It would become even sweeter if the price at Amazon rises during this period (which I suspect it may).

Costco offers virtually every manufacturer rebate on the planet so I would be surprised if they weren't in on this deal.

I'm curious if retail chains will do a store credit kinda thing or something for people who have just bought an HD player when this rebate comes about?

If I wasn't into home theater, I'd have a whole lotta money.

Have any of you given any thought to whom in their right frame of mind would purchase the XA2 before June 10th?

Right now folks that purchased the XA2 after the recent price increases over the low $519.65 at Amazon will be contemplating returning there unit and still come out ahead even paying the return shipping cost to Amazon. They will simply wait and re-order the XA2 to get the instant $100.00 rebate offer.

Unless you know for sure to the contrary I would assume the consumer HAS to actually make the purchase order between the specified dates imposed by Toshiba to get the $100.00 instant rebate. June 10th - June 16th on the XA2
This is a rebate offered by the manufacturer and not an incentive price reduction by Amazon or any other vendor, dealer, or distributor authorized to sell Toshiba products. So I dont think the 30 day price reduction match credit will work with Amazon either, but I may be wrong. Amazon credits any price reduction THEY impose within 30 days from delivery of an item.

Regards,

Hmm I just went to Value Electronics and the XA2 was $791. Do I need an AVS affiliate link to see the cheaper price?

Ok, I'm hearing conflicting info right now. Some people are saying that the $100 instant rebate is starting the 20th of may (this sunday) and others are saying that it starts June 10th. Which is it??
