wow, that is pretty amazing. Does it only work at retail stores, or can you use it on amazon? If so, I don't know how I can afford not to get one.

This completely brings 'A2 B&M retail pricing in line with online pricing, then...$300-ish (or less if you have a place like Costco). The 'A20 by extension levels out at around $400, I guess. But how much is the 'XA2 in B&M channels? Does that bring it down to online pricing, or will it still be higher?

Wow, that's big news. It's even bigger news if the $100 will be done with online merchants.

The fact that the $100 is an instant rebate and not a mail in rebate means that we could see some serious price drops.

Costco is currently selling the D2 player for $349. If they offered this deal the player would be selling for $249.

Toshiba is either very aggressive or a little desperate to ward off lower price BR machines like the $599 Panasonic that was announced today.

The posting only mentions the A2. Can this be used with the A20 or XA2?

Probably depends heavily on who's reading into it, jmpage2. One person's aggressive marketing is another person's desperate gamble...

Hmm. So I think I know what my birthday present to myself (June 18) will be...

Someone in the thread on the same topic over on the software forum already provided a quote that Amazon.com would be offering the instant rebate.

That could mean $450 XA2 in just a few weeks!

I think it's more desperate than aggressive. I wonder if they knew about Panasonic price cut and free movie offer. But it didnt take them long to counter-attack. Although $100 instant rebate is not as crazy as 54% off by Panasonic. I already have 2 hd dvd players, so I'm more interested in lower media prices. I totally refuse to spend $20-30 on HD DVD movie when blu-ray movies are sold for $13.99 after all the promotions. But all in all - this all is pretty exciting to me - looks like all the companies finally woke up and decided to do something to sell some merchandise - it's almost like Chrisatmas in May kinda thing! Toshiba needs to change the 5 free movie promotion a bit though - most of those 15 titles are lame. And PAnasonic gives away 2 POTC movies. Toshiba should include the Matrix trilogy to match that!

with the matrix coming out at the same time could this erase what is left of the bd sales lead cause by the ps3 launch?

i never ever expected the ps3 sales lead to be erased so quickly. six months back i expected a 10:1 bd sales advantage by now.

I've pretty much given up getting another Tosh because of the 5 free DVD crap, plus the new Panasonic BR player announcement, but this is making me re-think that. I'm just glad it's an "instant" rebate.

In the meantime, I'm going downstairs to "ask" the wife if we need an HD player in the living room. Wish me luck...

I wonder if Amazon will give a $100 credit back to anyone who purchased a Toshiba unit through them over the past 30 day (i.e. their 30 day Price Guarantee).

How will it work with Amazon? A coupon code you enter at time of purchase? Or would you have to call to place the order to make sure? I assume this only works when Amazon sells it, not through a separate vendor? This month will last forever.

FYI...The new Panasonic BD is really a rebadged 1st gen player with updated firmware...still a nice deal though but will not have the full featured BD specs due after Oct or maybe even 2008. Sounds like Panny is clearing out old stock.

The rebate will be available across a wide range of retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, HHGregg, Amazon.com and many others. The marketing and retail campaigns will also coincide with the Warner Home Video release of The Complete Matrix Trilogy and Letters from Iwo Jima, and the Paramount Home Entertainment release of Flags of Our Fathers on May 22nd, and will be supported by a multi-million dollar advertising campaign incorporating TV, online, newspaper, and radio.

Wait a Minute... $100 off. So what about Costco?? I've seen them selling the HD-A2 for $349, does that mean the HD-A2 with the $100 off deal can be purchased from Costco for $249

Someone answer quick before I explode with excitement

omg if that is true then I could pick up two HD DVD players for less $$$ than a single Blu-Ray player

Worst case, you can return and rebuy. Although with Amazon, I'm assuming you'd have to ship it back.
