My A2 will be here on Tuesday....a far cry from the original October date quoted at checkout. Only problem is the three movies have not shipped yet....one was out of stock which is holding up the other two....oh well....

I place my order on the 27th with super saver / free shipping as well

The DVD's shipped on the 30th I recieved them on the 31st. The player shipped on the 31st which not here yet.

The DVD's shipped from Richmond, CA. though the package says Fernley, NV . wierd?

The player says shipped from HARRISBURG, PA... but this should take a few days to get the CA. with ground shipping.

Where did your players come from?

Is this deal over? I've added the HD-A20 to my cart but I can't get the discount to apply with valid HD DVD's in my cart.

I think Amazon is a little slow right now. I purchased my HD-A2 from them just days before this promo and had them contact me via phone to see if I could get in on the additional 3 from Amazon. The gentleman on the phone had a very thick accent and seemed to not understand what I was explaining to him since he kept bringing up only the 5 free movies from Toshiba. After he spoke with a supervisor he told me I could get in on it to avoid the return and repurchase since I didn't receive my order yet and would email me a link/pdf that would show how to get in on the 3 additional free movies. He unfortunately sent me a link to the 5 free from Toshiba (which I think everyone knows about). I just emailed Amazon back (been busy) and am hoping they honor the 3 free movie promo.

Wish me luck fellas.

The HD-XA2 is out for delivery yay, but I have to leave my parent's house and drive up to college [31 miles away] to move into my dorm, haha! Oh well, if they're not here before I leave my mom will pick it up from UPS tomorrow and I'll be home Friday [work Sunday] to play with it. My cables from Monoprice don't come until tomorrow anyways [first day of classes] so even if I could wait for the HD-XA2 today, I could not hook it up.

If the three HD-DVDs don't come on Friday I'll have to go to Best Buy and pick up a HD-DVD to test the player with, heh. I'll make sure I get one that has Dolby TrueHD as well so I can make sure the analog outs are working properly as well,

Still no word on the HD-DVDs. Amazon says they STILL have not been shipped, ugh.

Just got my HD-A2 today. Hooked it up, updated the firmware, threw in Superman Returns and it worked like a champ. My movies shipped Saturday so hopefully I'll have them by the weekend.

Just out of curiosity is there anyway to see the bitrates of the video and audio? The display button just shows the encoding used and such. Thanks.

The A2 got here today, mfg. of March 07. Along with 2 of the movie shipments (granted 1 shipment was from pre-the sale)
Still waiting on 4 more movie shipments, that were ordered the same day.

I have not bothered hooking it up, I expect it will work the same as my first A2.
It will only be used for HD movies in the bedroom, as the BD-P1200 is used for SD movie upconvert (as well BD).

I could do a side by side with the A2 vs. the XA1, but from what I remember the XA1 was a tad better (other than sloooowwww load times).
(so I won't bother.)

You got screwed by the long weekend, UPS doesn't do pickups on saturdays, although, that does not explain why they didn't pick it up today.

Well, I've had UPS not update their records until the evening after they pick up the package.

3 disks arrived yesterday and I expect my A2 either today or tomorrow. Unlike most who got in on this deal I put the cart before the horse. I'm not planning on getting a HD display (LCD) until around black Friday. If a great deal surfaces before then I will jump on it but otherwise I'm stuck with my CRT for the next 3 months. I just couldn't pass up the 8 free movies and discount on the HD player. The red pill was easy to swallow.

I got my movies yesterday and my player shipped a couple of days ago, but it's not scheduled to be here until the 17th! That kind of sucks. It shipped from PA (near where I used to live) but I'm on the left coast (WA State).

I have a website, but apparently I can't put it here. WTF?

I'm contemplating purchasing the HD-A2 but need to be reassured that I have the capability of at least enjoying 1080i resolution.

My HDTV is a Sony KV-36XBR400 which has NO HDMI or DVI connections...but DOES have component connections. I have no cable or satellite hookups but do use a Sony SAT-HD100 reveiver for over-the-air UHF digital channels which go to my TV at 1080i resolution via the component connection...and very nicely I might add which is why I hate to part with this excellent TV.

Now, the way I understand it is, I cannot upconvert regular DVD's without a HDMI hookup, but can get 1080i resolution with a component hookup when using HD DVD's....is this correct??

Now, to add some more fuel to the fire, I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-SR605 A/V receiver. Could I run an HDMI cable from the Toshiba HD-A2 to the Onkyo, and out the Onkyo to my TV with a component hookup and expect to upconvert to 1080i??

I'll eventually break down and buy a 1080p HDTV, but the whole purpose of this post is to try and enjoy every ounce of my Sony TV because it has been such a great performer. And I'm quite sure I'm not the only one in this predicament so any technical expertise that you could pass my way would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Joe

From the A2, if you run HDMI to the 605 and component to the TV, it will work for HD DVD's, including the best audio. SD DVD's will not be upconverted.

From what I understand, your TV will "upscale" anything that comes to it (ie a 480p DVD) into it's native resolution. If that TV's native resolution is 1080i, it will "upscale" it the that resolution. So, your DVD's will go 480p out via component cables to the display, then it will be changed to 1080i. I am no EE, but this is what I understand from LOTS of reading here and on other forums. You don't really "need" an upconverting DVD player unless the player's scalers are better than the displays.

Also, I do think that the 605 has upconverting capabilities, but the HDCP on the discs via HDMI will prevent it from working in the way you intend.

HD DVD's will be output in their native resolution from the player. Usually, picking "up to 1080i" for a 1080i TV is the way to go for best PQ.

Good luck,

Pat
