RTK, yes, quite a bit. The Gen 3 players are completely re-designed electrically and now fit in a 3/4" slimmer box. The new low profile looks very slick with it's high gloss finish and slim chassis. Faster load times are the result of the new more efficient electrical design and new processor so I would expect a more reliable service as well.

In addition, the two additional free HD DVD titles packed in the box make this a much better choice vs the current A2.

The biggest feature advantages are with the A30 and A35.

ccotenj, yes, and the up-converting looks very close to the A2/A20. I have not done a shoot-out side-by-side so I can't say for sure.

Hey Robert, I'd like to order the A30 from you..I just got the A20 from Best Buy but I noticed the discount from AVS members here so I might as well go 3rd gen. My only question is, should I order from that first post link to get that (HD-A30 Bare bones No double box, No free gifts) thing.

Thanks.

Hey Robert doesn't one of the the new players have the Reon processor like the XA2? and you think the XA2 will be superior to the new model?

nfinity, I like that deal, but if you want the premium HDMI cable and cool portable B&W TV go for the extra $30 to get the VIP deal.

We're shipping all A30 orders tomorrow or no later than this Wednesday. Great new player, you will love it!

steviec, no all Gen 3 players have the same vp, only the XA2 boasts the Silicon Optix Reon processor.

Robert, can you confirm that the A30 does not have any deinterlacing issues like the A20?

AnchorBay Technologies makes great video processors. I would not be surprised if the ABT video processors rivaled the Silicon Optix processors. I believe there are the Realta and Reon. With ABT there are 2010, 1018 and 1010. Remember ABT makes the iScan VP50 series of video processors that more than 35% of AVS (extreme videophiles) uses.

Now that it's out, it seems appropriate to start this thread. C'mon... someone must have bought the A30 from Best Buy...!

Quote:
Yesterday, Toshiba unveiled three new sleek and stylish third generation HD DVD players in the US market. All three models are priced under $500 and have been designed to keep up with the high growth in demand for High Definition TVs.

Toshiba's third generation HD DVD players include the entry level HD-A3 player, the Toshiba HD-A30 and the HD-A35 HD DVD players.

As compared to Toshiba's first and second generation HD DVD players, the new third generation line includes various enhancements. Some of the enhancements include an improvement in video performance with 1080p/24 frames per second (24p) support.

Yet another improvement in Toshiba's third generation HD DVD player line includes CE-Link (HDMI-CEC) connectivity which offers the capability to communicate with and control another CE device. For example, using CE-Link with One Touch Play, users will be able to start playing a movie with just a single touch of a button on the player's remote.

The entry level Toshiba HD-A3 player features 1080i output capability, while the HD-A30 and the HD-A35 players have an output of 1080p resolution (1920×1080p), which happens to be the highest HD signal currently available.

Plus, both the Toshiba HD-A30 and HD-A35 models are capable of outputting signals at 1080p/24 frames per second, allowing users to enjoy movies in their native frame rate. These players also feature CE-Link, allowing for a two-way control between the HD DVD player and the TV via an HDMI connection.

Toshiba's top-of-the-line HD-A35 HD DVD player also has support for Deep Color via HDMI. This allows compatible display devices to deliver outstanding video quality, displaying billions of possible colors.

What's more; the HD-A35 player offers 5.1 channel analog output and High Bit Rate Audio (up to 7.1 channel) once again via HDMI. With content encoded in 7.1ch, this advanced surround sound is achieved through the HDMI connection bypassing the player's internal audio processor and sending the signal to a 7.1 capable A/V receiver. High Bit Rate Audio will allow the consumer to integrate the HD-A35 with the latest multi-channel A/V receivers and enjoy a whole new dimension of high definition home entertainment.

Coming to the design of Toshiba's third generation line of HD DVD players; they all feature rounded edges, slim chassis at justy 59.5mm, making them nearly half as tall as Toshiba's first generation players.. The A3, A30 and A35 HD DVD players also sport high gloss, black acrylic face plates that lend a very sleek look to the players.

Yoshi Uchiyama, Group Vice President, Toshiba's Digital A/V Group said, Consumers will always have a consistent experience with HD DVD as we have an established platform to keep the players updated to ensure the ultimate HD movie experience.

A mandatory Ethernet port in all HD DVD players ensures that consumers can receive updates to their units to support the latest offerings from the studios and maximizing their investment in the format, he added.

Plus, all of Toshiba's HD DVD models are backward compatible allowing users to enjoy their libraries of current DVD and CD software while enhancing the look of regular DVDs by up converting them to near High Definition quality.

The Toshiba HD-A3 player costs $299.99 and will be available this October. The HD-A30 HD DVD player will be available in September 2007 and will carry a price tag of $399.99, while the HD-A35 player costs $499.99 and will be available this October.

I just ordered an HD-A3 from Robert.

(I decided 1080p isn't worth the $100 to me right now. If I decide I want it later, I'll trickle th A3 down to the rec room and get an A30 or 4th Gen.)

Hummm, Since Transformers was slipped from Oct. 16th to Oct. 25th I am o.k. with this. However, I am going to have quite a stack of movies to watch by then.

Robert, Do you have a list of people on the A35? Is the list getting too long to ship all out in 1 day?

I remember JVC having to do 3 or 4 shipments to meet demand for a projector some time ago.

Robert, do you have any insight into the capability of the 3rd gen players to internally decode 7.1 TrueHD and send 8 channels linear PCM over HDMI? I was told you might be knowledgable about such things. Thanks!

I'm wondering if the A30 and A35 as passing 1080p24 right out of the box, or if there is a firmware update? Also, Robert, can you ship to Canada?

The 25th is a Thursday. I take it you pre-ordered via Amazon? Sounds like your copy won't be sent out until they receive their 2nd or 3rd shipment. Transformers is still listed as being released on October 16th. It better not change since I've already requested the day off from work. LOL

Robert, hate to hit you with yet another question. But I need to order two A3's and when I go to checkout it's tacking on shipping charges for both even though the special page says free shipping....

Also, one is for me, one is for my parents. Do I need to do anything "special" to ensure both of us can get in on the 5 free DVD mail-in offer?

Thanks and I have my mouse finger on the trigger!

RIP HD-DVD

codeyf, just put a note in the comments section as to anything you want us to do or tell us to take care and it shall be done.

msg44, I have no plans on changing it at this moment, but CE prices are always fluid.

We got our shipment in a few hours ago and when the truck pulled up I immediately grabbed two A30s and set one up in my theater demo room with our JVC HD1, 1080p/24fps native and our PRO-110FD 50" Pioneer Elite 1080p/24fps native panel and all I could say is wow, Wow, WOW!

You gotta see Toshiba’s new G3 baby playing 1080p at 24fps with great titles, like Bourne Identity, 300 and you will fall in love allover again with Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich.

Thank you Toshiba, HD DVD, BD and all of the great studios for developing this fantastic entertainment. Good job, very great stuff you invented and created.

Can’t wait for Transformers and Star Trek (CBS is re-mastering from the original 35mm film to HD DVD 1080p/24fps). Get ready to laugh, cry and smile like never before.

Tonight we’re doing a “Heros” theater party at my home theater.
