I was the single most responsible person that convinced Toshiba to give us this upgrade. I never worked harder on any project than this one so I am sorry to tell you that I am very sensitive to this criticism.

Just last week a EVP at Toshiba told me that "every meeting we have all I ask for is upgrades, fixes and pushing our product development engineers to expand our technology to improve the pq and product reliability and add more user features. He went on to say every other account is focused on getting the best price. What's up with that?

I will always carry the torch for advanced product development to the day I die and that isn't going to be soon, so get used to me being around and bugging my manufacturing partners to advance our science.

PS, I appreciate everyone's doubting my personal comments on the A30. I never meant it to be a review. I would write a better review that that quick post if I was reviewing the product. A member quoted me form another thread so that's how it got here. However, by now more than 100 of my customers have been shipped A30s and many have received them today so expect many reviews soon.

I quoted you because after meeting you in person and viewing some demos I trust your visual judgement.

Albeit short and not comprehensive, it was the 1st review.

Where are those other 100 owners?

Robert, Have you seen a demo of the A35 up converting SD DVD? If so, how does it compare to the XA2?

Thank you,

Yes, I got mine from Robert today. I only had a few minutes to play with it. I was pleased when I opened the box and saw the the two DVD's sitting on top. I have an XA-1 and the boot time and start time is worlds apart, the A-30 is approaching a regular dvd player. Also my player is properly outputting 1080p/24 after selecting it in the menu, so I am happy. Picture looked excellent, but again I only had time to play with for about 10 minutes.

Does the XA2 take 1080P24 straight off the disc or does it got to 1080i before going to 1080P24?(with the recent 2.5 update)

kshipe, please, let us know how the smoothness of rewind and fast-forward, other operational smoothness is on the A30. The A2 is kind of jerky/clunky on those functions. Also, if you hit the subtitle button on the remote do subtitles come right up or do you have to go into the menu to access subtitles?

tokerblue - interesting note on the scaling. If you don't mind my asking, where did you source this information? I'm contemplating going from my XA2 to the A35 and would like to see some more detailed specs. If Anchor Bay upscaling is true, that would potentially be a good reason as all the people who have a VP series scaler say they love the resultant PQ.

I can't say that I'm at all disappointed with the Reon in the XA2 though!

Robert:

Are you 100% sure of this, it seems reports of the AX2 might be processed 1080P24 not native, could you check with your contacts at Toshiba re:

1080P24 Native direct off the disc vs 1080P24 processed

Thank you in advance

Do any of the G3 players decode DTS-MA? Do they pass Lion's native 1080/24p pass-through test?

If they do, I can finally replace my A1.

Hello all

Many of us do not have receivers with HDMI. Thus we are very interested in the audio over optical when playing HD-DVD disks.
HD-A2 over optical transcodes Audio tracks to 1.5 Mbps DTS and some recievers have problems with this version of DTS
HD-A20 and HD-XA2 over optical both transcode tracks to 640 Dolby Digital and most recievers have no issures with this. However some have noticed a slight delay in audio over optical with the HD-A20. And if you have a receiver than cannot adjust for the delay you can have lip sync issues. Has the
HD-A30 fixed these audio delay issues?

HD-A3 over optical transcodes to 1.5 DTS or 640 Dolby Digital?

HD-A30 over optical transcodes to 1.5 DTS or 640 Dolby Digital?

HD-A35 over optical transcodes to 1.5 DTS or Dolby Digital?

Any information on this would be helpful in deciding which to purchase.

Thanks

Just got my A30 from Robert and wow the PQ and AQ are great...clearly better than my A2. The shiny piano black finish is also a very nice improvement frome the A2 series.

Just got my A30 from Robert and have it playing 300. Here are a few observations:

1. The set looks great..much nicer than the previous versions. The shiny piano black finish is gorgeous. The sliver strip across the front it thinnner and then less obvious. I would have prefered all black but so be it.

2. There is an improvement in start up and loading times. I haven't actually measured the start up time, but the loading time seems to be around 16 secs or so (from closing the drawer to picture on the TV.)

3. Sound quality is fantastic...I have not played this disck on my my A2, but the introdution will literally blow you away if you happen to have the volume set too high...as I did. At a more realistic level the sound is amazing...very clear, excellent separation, almost what I would call hyper-realistic.

4. Picture quality at 1080p on my West 47" monitor is gorgeous. Very sharp, intense colors, great blacks. A nice improvement over the A2.

Thanks again to Robert from Value Electronics for getting this great machine to his customers so quickly.

Can you comment on the smoothness of FF/rewind/subtitles, etc., during playback? Earlier gen players (HD DVD and blu-ray) have had issues with this.

There is a pause of about 1-2 seconds when i press ff/rewind and then a smooth progression of still images. Pressing the Subtitles gives blue box saying "Subtitles: Press the Subtitles button to enable subtitles. Press the direction arrows to change subtitiles."

Hope this answers your questions.

Just for you I popped in Hunt for Red October. PQ was remarkably clear..especially in close-ups. For example, reflections of the elevator lights in James Earl Jones' glasses were bright, sharp edged, and entirely free of any kind of fuzziness or distortion.

I would say you would be extremely satified...at least on this title.
