NEW MAJOR UPDATE: Toshiba projects sales of 1 million stand alone players total to date by end of 2007. The 30 million came from a excerp about the number of projected HDTV sales. Robert was in error and apologizes for the incorrect info

UPDATE: I added some info from the press event below http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...3#post11534083
and here is Robert excellent info from the event: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...7#post11534077

I don't think anything has happened yet, I heard the Sony and Toshiba press conferences are supposed to occur this afternoon/evening. Should start seeing more news soon.

4pm Denver time.

It's 2:25 there right now. An hour and a half yet before Toshiba takes the stage. Interestingly enough, Toshiba is followed immediately by Sony at 5pm.

I just got back to my hotel after attending Toshiba's CEDIA press conference with Jon Spackman, AVS HD DVD/BD Moderator.

The theme was Star Trek and the presenters were dressed in Star Trek outfits and the stage was set with Star Trek decorations. The first presentation was all about their new LCD panels, however, I'll just discuss the HD DVD side of the presentation here.

Here's the list of the new news.

1. All Gen 3 players will be packed with Born Identity and 300. All ********************* Gen 3 advance orders qualify for the two additional titles packed with the players.

2. Buy a HD DVD player and the Star Trek box set and their is a mail-in rebate for a Star Trek HD DVD phaser remote control unit, very cool looking and sound effects. All ********************* pre-orders are eligible.

3. The 5 free HD DVD movies will be extended till 2/28/08 and new titles are added to the selection. xBox and notebook PC with HD DVD drives will qualify for the 5 free HD DVD movie offer.

4. Just considering Warner, Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks and Dreamworks Animation more than 125 new titles will be release by the end of '07.

5. Shinco, Ventura, Alpine, Onkyo and Integra and the 3 new Gen 3 HD DVD players will all ship by early Q4 '07.

6. Total HD DVD player unit sales are expected to reach more than 1 million stand alone units by the end of ‘07.

7. Amazon and ValueEletronics.com report the A2 is the #1 best seller.

8. According to NPD data, BD stand alone players have 16% market share, HD DVD enjoys a 33% market share, while SD DVD holds 51%.

9. All studios are going to expand the connectivity features, like on the Star Trek HD DVD you can connect to CBS's server and get a tour of the Star Ship Enterprise.

10. All Toshiba products are Earth friendly and will carry the "Earth Protection" logo on their packaging. There is a long list of things Toshiba has developed to ensure their Earth friendly compliance.

HD DVD boldly goes where no other format has gone before.

Well it was a pretty exciting event! I was lucky to sneak in with Robert from VE (What a nice guy). Toshiba displayed a few of their new Regza LCD TVs with "the world's thinnest bezel" (the tvs have a 0.9 inch bezel frame around them).

Then they showed and talked about the thrid gen players. The A35 and A30 are supposed to ship with 24 frame output, the A35 will add High bit rate audio output and deep color.

All three models will ship with "300, and Bourne Identity" in the box, plus they are eligible for the new 5 free mail in offer that goes from oct. 1 - feb 2008 and has new movies choices.

I walked up and looked close at the A3, A30, and A35. They look beautiful in person. the pictures we have seen do not do them justice. I turned off the A35 and Timed how long it takes to boot back up, sorry to say it takes 37 seconds from power off, press open, to tray opening. A Toshiba rep assured me they load discs faster then the second gen models. Yet they have practically the same boot times.

The final speaker was the President of Universal Home Entertainment who talked about the 125 releases by the end of the year (from all supporting studios combined) and mentioned the titles that have been announced before like Bourne trilogy, Harry potter series, etc.

The final announcement was about the CBS release of Star Trek season one that will include a mail in offer for a free Star Trek ray gun remote control.

I am sure I am missing some things but this is what I recall. Robert, care to add anything I forgot?

Just enjoy HD in whatever form you can (Sat, Cable, D-VHS, OTA, HD DVD, or BD).

Any more final specs on what the differences are between the A30 and A35? Being a $100 difference, it would be nice to know if I should order the A30 or wait on the A35.

Also,

For those of us that currently own and HD DVD player, will we be eligible for the new 5 free movies (new list) or will we have to find "other" ways of getting the 5 free movies?

That's all great news, I know it's all mainly about hardware right now, but have you heard anything regarding when we can expect a release list of the actual titles for Q4? Thanx

Great news. Never knew about Alpine and the other brands.

Wow HDDVD is really stepping up!

What more do you want? This is a solid showing. Hitting on all cylinders with the Integra announcement and 125 titles for Q4. MUCH better than the confidence-dashing showing at CES.

Besides, with the Paramount/Dreamworks megabomb, rest assured there's a momentum shift and that there's some serious re-evaluations going on on the Blu-ray side.

Relax and enjoy the movies. The winds of change are a-blowin'.

^^ Robert himself told us to expect more MAJOR news at Cedia when the paramount megabomb dropped (I'll dig the quote up later). NOTHING in that list is what I or anyone else of sound mind would consider major.

Ok, I missed that part about 30m players. With estimated sales of around 500k total players (Tosh + Xbox) how exactly do they intend to sell 25 million in 3 months?

So what aren't you telling us?

Robert,

I'm as optomistic as the next guy, but.. 30 MILLION by the end of '07? That's less than 4 months from now.

Perhaps you mean by end of '08?

Maybe the total includes laptops with HD DVD players. I believe Toshiba alone sold something like 9 million laptops last year.

Hi Robert,
Hope your enjoying the show. I'm one who would be happy to hear about Tosh LCD's!
Know your busy, so thanks for posting.

30 million stand alones in '07 is insane!!!

Hope we see the 150 titles B4 CEDIA is over.

(No reply required)

"I wonder if any of the releases had slipcovers though."
"Are these comfirmed to have slipcovers?"
"They look nice in those slips."
