So far I am very impressed with the A35! I just started "playing" with it so more to come. I will say the pic Q for HD DVDs is outstanding. It is equal to or better than the XA2. I will be doing some good A/B comparisons tonite so more on that later. As for SD dvd upconversion I will also compare those as well. As for HBR AUDIO or bitstream passing it is already functioning. As you can SEE in the pics. I love what the onkyo 905 does with Dolby TrueHD. The A35 already has my vote for the starting spot in my theater. Of course if the XA2 received the update it would be equal to. Oh and one more quick fact, the LOAD time was the fastest next gen player I have had. Easily under 30 seconds (though I did not time it)... That is a huge plus for so many that complain about it. I personally have never let it bother me but the A35's load time is very impressive. The remote is not as nice but I am using the universal remote for my other HD DVD players I have had and that works just fine. And one last side note, no "FORCED" 1080p/23.98 mode with this unit either. Maybe one day Toshiba will make that possible with a firmware update. As for now the little time I have spent with the A35 it gets my vote for the best HD DVD player available... More to come...

Joe, you are a great American!!! Can you please list the movie or movies that allowed you to enjoy True HD on your receiver. Also, are you able to hear the sound effects or commentary when you are in this mode. There has been so many conflicting reports on whether HD DVD authored in Advance mode would allow True HD to be decoded in the receiver. Thanks in advance for your reply.

I had Dawn of the Dead in for that one. I am heading back down now to check on that and start my testing... Thanks for the compliment. I was just relieved to see the Dolby TrueHD light up!

Nice Joe! Thanks for this thread. I myself and waiting to see what you think on the difference between the A35 and XA2. I had the XA2 on order but cancelled it to make sure I really wanted it or the A35.

You didn't. Bitstream should be coming shortly for the XA2. By the way, to the OP, does the A35 have the Reon processor?

The XA2 is awesome too. I have a hard time believing though that the A35 PQ could be any better than the XA2.

You just need to leave HDMI in AUTO and turn on the direct audio option (all in set up)...

Also, just played around with some of the features. When in Dolby TrueHD mode if you enable director commentary the audio switched to Dolby Digital cinema mode or probably whatever default you have your receiver in. Also, in Dolby TrueHD mode yu can still hear the remote control beeps! I will say this at the risk of upsetting XA2 owners (including myself) the Dawn of the Dead comparison favored the A35. The colors were a little better but the picture was sharper. I also had my wife check to make sure I am not "seeing" things. More to come!

My A35 shipped today from VE, thanx Robert! Same day shipping, awesome Load times sound excellent, I can't wait to try mine once it gets here, one question that I haven't been able to get answered is if I'll see any difference on SD upconversition coming from a Gen 1 player, I currently own the HD A1, and yes I know the A35 doesn't have the Reon Thanx in advance

Next up is Troy Director's Cut... Dolby TrueHD bitstream sounds excellent being sent to the 905! The opening scene when he fights the BIG guy was awesome. You can clearly hear the spears hitting his shield and then flying past him (very clearly) in the left surrounds. And then when he stabs him the bass could be felt upstairs! And finally when he yells is ther no one else? That makes the hairs on your neck stand up! You can clearly tell the sound quality is better having the newer receivers do the work!

Darn, the projector I am considering seems to need it in forced mode to function with 24fps. Other than that it sounds like a great player. Love those load times. Can't wait for mine to come in.

Thanks,

Joerod - Did you get the A35 from Robert?

Keep up the great info. I'm thinking of replacing my XA2 in my theater with the A35 ... but only if there are absolutely no lipsync problems with it. I guess there's no way you can do any test to see if the 5.1 analog output is in perfect sync with the pix?

If I could get a model like the A35 to provide in-sync analog audio output, I'd put my XA2 in the bedroom and be one happy camper.

If you can't test it ... then I have a question for Robert. Mr. Value ... I bought my Panny BD player from you. Works great (when I use it ... which ain't much). If I order an A35 and the analog output isn't up to my synchronous requirements, what is your return policy?

hmm, i find this hard to believe. i have the Xa2 and i did some comparison with the optical and analog outs using good ol' CD-Audio to my Rotel preamp and a pair of magnepan speakers. i really could not tell any difference. for movies, it would be even harder to distinguish between the two.
