18 players per store in the United States = 68,400 players sold in the first shipment, that doesn't include any international stores (2,800 stores) that will get them as well. Let's say they get 3 shipments minimum, that's 205,320 units in a 2 month timeframe (U.S. alone), BR may be in some serious trouble.

Is it possible to buy this unit now, and take the receipt back on black friday and get some money back from any possible sales? Or will they say that price is only good on in-stock items? I don't feel like waiting in line at 4am, and I know my Walmart has a 90 day return policy.

From the NEW $699 Sony BDP-S500 and $1299 BDP-S2000ES manuals...

"This player supports BD-ROM Profile 1 only. Playback of later versions of BDs is not guaranteed."

Well that would be less of a loss than selling an equal amount of PS3's.

Yep, the color isn't that great and the picture is not the best. Wasn't there something about the wal-mart HD players being a slightly different color?

NOOO it's the same A2. Trust me on that. I'll take clear pics soon as they come in. I didn't go to work today but Friday I will. If the came in that is.

BTW, that is what the A2 looks like. Black on top and silver on the bottom half. I own one and its sitting right infront of me.

Hmmmmm What to write?

Just visted my local Walmart (Dawsonville, GA), where there were six A2's underneath the one A3 that remains. There was no signage, but the yellow and white sticker on the boxes had a price of $198.00. As I was leaving I noticed a pallet of A/V stuff and it had another 16 A2s on it. I have been waiting for this price point to buy, but alas there were only 3 HD DVD titles in the store and I didn't want any of them. What fun would a new player be with no movies?? So, tomorrow I may have to pick up a couple of movies elsewhere and one of these players from Wally World.

Sounds like I need to get to my local walmart to see what's new there. I saw some A3's there a week or two ago but no A2's. I'll post pics if I see anything to confirm this in my area

You know I just linked this over to the HighDef forum and while discussing this topic was wondering if Paramount and DW were aware of this the whole time and based part of their deal around. It would also explain why WB has continued to state that they will be Watching Stand Alone Sales in Q4. It make perfect sense and would be a blow to the notion that HD is Dead or dying. This is exciting news for the HD crowd and will make this holiday season fun to watch.

I'm an Asian American myself so let's not even go there. I know HK and China have a huge film industry. As long as I can get good movies such as Fearless in HDDVD, I'm happy! BTW China is choosing a version of HDDVD so all is not lost.

I couldn't wait, I ordered mine from Amazon.com, when it comes out I'll get amazon to reimburse me the price difference. :P Plus, these will go fast in my area and I don't want to have to get up early and wait in line for a 30 dollar price difference.

It would be great if we could get a copy of the circular scanned and posted though, when it is released of course..

Not sure I follow you, are you trying to say that it is a Wal-Mart exclusive item, or that once the 18 in each store are sold, they won't get anymore in.?.?

I know Walmart has a tendency to buy up and sell Last Year's product lines on a lot of electronics in order to offer lower prices, but is this expected to be a one time shipment or a permanent item on Walmart's shelves for the foreseeable future? I would expect it to be a permanent item, Walmart generally doesn't usually bother to take the time to add an item to it's product list if it's a one time thing, I would think we'll see the A2's at Walmarts for the next 6 months anyway. If it's a long term deal then this is really big for HD-DVD.

The cost of HD DVD was to develop the technology. The cost to actually produce a player is dirt cheap and well under the $200 retail price.

This is true and if Walmart's involved then they're making a profit off of selling these players at 198 a pop.

November 3rd my ass! I was JUST at my Wal-mart (where they didn't sell HD DVD's or BD's previously), but now the stockboys at 11pm are loading up this EXACT A2 display on an endcap with a big sign that says $198! Woohoo!

They also added an endcap for high def movies with HD DVD and BD movies on display. Unfortunately, they had more BD movies on the display than HD movies. But, they had no BD players on display like they had a stack with A2's on it. The only BD player that had was a (I think) Philips stocked with the regular DVD players which was priced at $498. They also had an RCA HD DVD player right next to it for $448. But still, nothing like the massive $198 A2 display. Oh man, I'm pumped!

This means that they're doing this to A LOT of their stores, maybe ALL of them. Because I couldn't find a Wal-mart at all that carried high def BD or HD in my area, but now they expanded to a previously non-HD store with this A2 thing. Wow, imagine a stack of A2's in EVERY Wal-mart across the country for $198... !

Maybe this explains why some here have had a hard time finding any HD-A2's or A3's. Could be Toshiba has been real busy pumping out A2's for Walmart.

I think we all need a life if we need to go running to Walmart to prove that they have A2's for sale. I have to say is it really that important? HD-DVD isn't going away anytime soon. Nice deal though.

It just looks expensive!
