Hi!

I'm going to spend most of the money I currently have (I'm a student) on a Panasonic plasma TV within the next weeks and would love to be able to enjoy some HD DVDs as soon as possible. However, the cheapest HD DVD player available in Germany (that's where I live), the Toshiba HD-E1, still costs 260 (~$370). As I don't care much about PAL SD DVDs I'm currently thinking about simply importing the Toshiba HD-A1 (which is the cheapest HD DVD player available, right?) from the United States. That, however, would mean I'd have to buy a stepdown converter and pay customs duty.

What do you think?

how much is the converter? How much are customs?

At no point in your rambling, incoherent post were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read it.

I don't know much about stepdown converters. I know that there are very cheap ones (~$10) available but I don't know whether these ones should be avoided or not. As for the customs... I honestly have no idea how they're calculated.

Just buy it local, save up a little more coin and be done. Instead of a plasma, save some more coin and go LCD or rear projection. If you really want to go all out, buy a screen and go front projection, those games will look great on a 90 inch screen and so will HD DVD. Check out the Epson Home Cinema 1080 probably along the same price or cheaper than the plasma.

A little more? More like twice as much.

I've decided to buy the Panasonic TH-42PV71F which is going to cost me approximately $1400. I'm pretty sure that right now, you won't find anything better for this price. In Germany, that is.
