Walmart needs to ensure they have two things. They have a large stock of the players and the "Out of Stock" sign boards!

Well done Toshiba and Walmart. Very well done indeed.

this looks to be a in-store only deal not unlike a black friday sale. it almost seems as if stores this year are doing more fridays instead of just 1 where they have spectacular sales. last year i've seen reports of ppl getting killed at black friday sales. perhaps this year they're going to space them out a bit to prevent disasters.

these retail stores practically turn into war zones on Black Friday. you could literally be putting your life on the line trying to save $100 on the A2. unless you can actually get it online, in which case ignore what i said.

Um sodrock. The cheapest and I mean the absolute cheapest bluray player around in aus is $850. I'm not entirly confident the price I have found on the A2/E1 ($600) is the cheapest.

Bottom line is that we are paying for your players either way. Not that HD DVD are ripping us off. Both side are subsidising your players from our sales, this tells me that Toshiba are now more confidant in overseas sales in order to price your players so low.

Everybody have fun on friday. And don't shot anyone while standing in line waiting for a player like the PS3 guys done.

Thanks, hdN00b, for resurrecting my little post, LOL.

If you want one of these players, I say be prepared to rise and shine at oh, about dark-thirty and camp out in line for a while.

Who wants to guess at how many new HD DVD owners will enter the market on Friday? You can bet this was planned for a long time and that the movie studios will be paying attention.

This is going to generate some huge advertising for HD DVD too. Seriously, it'll be plastered all over the Internet tomorrow and even if people miss out on this, they're going to know HD DVD has become affordable this Holiday season.

You could probably find a HDMI hub for the $349 you saved in not purchasing the cheapest BD player.

I called them, the employee was kind enough to double check for me as well.

"*" (while quantities last) and *t* (not available in all stores) mean no rain checks either. It may be possible to get Circuit City or Best Buy to match, but they check to see if it is in stock.

WOW!
I agree this was planned well in advance. Now I wondering about how many Wallyworld has, if this is their price from this Friday - Dec 25 they are going to need hundreds of thousands.

Remember the rumor about Wal-mart wanting 2million Chinese players... They will need that many at this price.

Dude, he just didn't have access to the full ad. It may have been "managers only" so this ad wouldn't spread early. He's been 100% honest so far with the entire A2 situation sating back 2-3 weeks now.

i've read this thread and i have yet to hear what the strategy should be to definitely get me one of these players. I was on the fence on deciding which format to get, but it looks like i'm going HD.

WHat would be a good time to come? If stores open at 8, would 6-ish be a good time?

The players will be available at brick and mortar Wal-Mart stores as far as I know. This deal is not applicable for online shoppers.

I hope not-hopefully they will have enough in stock where we can all benefit from this marvelous sale. Anybody still have that picture taken of the A2 endcap with the 199 price? I wonder how many were on that pile and if that will be typical of all the walmarts carrying them

If you have a newer receiver like the Onkyo 605 and up series, they support decoding of TrueHD and DTS-HD MA sent bitstream over HDMI. Only the A35 does this right now, the XA2 is supposed to get a firmware upgrade to enable it also. Early reports from users seem to indicate that receiver decoding sounds better than the internal decoding in the player. Most admit that their receivers are adding processing enhancements after decoding so that may be why they like it better, but better is still better to them.

If you don't have a HDMI receiver, then you must use the 5.1 analog output models (A1, XA1, XA2, A35) to get TrueHD decoded internally and sent out over the analog outs.

If you are using the optical output in bitstream mode you will only get Dolby Digital 5.1 at around 640kbs bit rate. In PCM mode it only has bandwidth to support 2 ch PCM.

The 1st gen and 2nd gen players sent the bitstream optical output as 1.5mbs DTS. If your receiver's optical input can decode DTS, then with a high resolution sound source on the disc, this should sound better than the A3's output at 640kbs. That is the only advantage the A2 has over the A3.
