I received my DV-HD805 yesterday. Some impressions:
Build quality is excellent, for the main unit and also the remote. The piano finish of parts of the remote and the player front looks really high-value. I like the very small red/blue LED which indicates operation. It fits the needs of a dark viewing room very well. Same for the display, the green colored characters are bright and impressive, but can be dimmed and totally switched off if desired.
One negative: while I've got the impression that the Onkyo reads HDDVDs and DVDs very stable, this player is not prone to read errors of bad discs. I got one of the famous 0x4B... error codes with the one bad disc I have. I'll make some tests today with the same disc on a HD-XE1 and a HD-XA1 which I also own.
Regarding the picture quality: I did not make a 1:1 comparison between the HD-XE1 and DV-HD805 yet, but I got the *impression* that the Onkyo produces a sharper image on my display which I've connected through component cables.
I'll try to do a 1:1 comparison sometimes this week, to see whether this is real or just a placebo effect (sometimes your brain suggests that something which is higher priced must be automatically better).
I've watched 2 movies yesterday and so far I'm very happy with the player.
EDIT: some more infos:
My player came with firmware 2.6. It is not region free for DVDs, but will play PAL DVDs and NTSC DVDs out of the box, if the region is correct or not set on the DVD.
