Watched Bourne Ultimatum the other day (first time since the day Warner announced they were ending Red support!). Picture was great, TrueHD sound was outstanding!

Just working my way through my HDDVD collection at the mo:

Re-watched "I Am Legend" the other night (HD Combo disc) - chose the Alternative version. Still looks and sounds great (TrueHD sound). Good film and the Alternative ending works in my opinion !

Also watched "Beowulf - Director's Cut". Didn't think it looked as good as I remember. Close-ups are good,. but at times I thought it would've been eye-poppingly good. Sound was good for a DD+ track. Film is OK, not sure why it got such critical praise on release as I really feel that having Ray Winstone as the lead takes you out of the movie too much with his cockney accent !

I still have a few sealed discs to get through. i.e. Apollo 13, Trading Places, Wyatt Earp, Deer Hunter and The Wild Bunch....where to start ????

Start with Warner releases - if they were manufactured by cinram, they could be unplayable or lock up part way through.

Thanks, yes unfortunately I've had 2 previous HD DVDs from WB that "died" - Superman and Batman Begins. Luckily WB replaced them with Blus...even over here in the UK !! Hopefully they're the only ones? Where does it state that they were made by Cinram? Is it on the packaging?

Thanks

I've never been able to determine that. I just made a point of opening and playing all Warner and Warner distributed titles - and found a bunch of defectives - and Warner (Magnolia and Rhino) replaced them.
Warner sent blu-rays - Magnolia and Rhino actually still had HD-DVDs of the offending titles so I got new HD-DVDs and they worked fine.

Do you remember who you contacted at Magnolia? I still need to replace my One Last Thing and Enron discs- I sent an email to what should have been their customer service, but never heard back from anyone. Might have to try calling them.

Looks like it was worth checking - found at least another 4 WB titles that are defective !! Sigh....hope WB replace these as well and blu's would be fine smile.gif !!

Halloween is coming soon so I watched again my favourite Tim Burton movie, Sleepy Hollow on HD-DVD.

The PQ (1080p/VC-1 encode) is great and the DTS track sounds marvellous. Johnny Depp is a talented actor and I really loved Christopher Walken who played the Horseman. Burton created an excellent dark tale from the legend of the Headless Horseman. Sleepy Hollow is the best choice for a Halloween movie marathon.

House Of Wax will be the next one. biggrin.gif

Dreamgirls.

I bought this disc when it first went on sale a few months after it was released and finally watched it now. The video quality is superb, and the sound is fantastic (NOT lossless, and did not miss it), and it is an enjoyable modern musical with a good story that never slows down.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I watched this for the first time. Really beautiful transfer on HD DVD.

Just watched Batman Begins. Awesome. Got it used on Amazon for pennies + shipping.

I never understood how HD-DVD 24p worked (it does, just whenever a computer sees the files on the disc it thinks it's 29.97 FPS).

Flags of our Fathers sound superior to Blu-Ray cool.gif

Will I find La Scala, or better, to displace my La Scala fronts, before I displace my kg1, kg2 & kg3 with Heresy or better?

Since I got a CalMAN/Lumagen/C6 color cube calibration system, the HD-DVD version of Pride & Prejudice has become my go-to disk for theater demo. It is just stunning... the lighting, textures, depth and the colors. Makes you really appreciate good gamma! It's really beautiful.

I've had the Blade Runner box set for years, and last night watched The Final Cut (Disc 1) for the first time. Astonishing. I have seen BR many times, including in the theater back in '82, and both laserdisc and multiple DVD versions, and I never enjoyed it as much as on my 10' projection screen last night on my XA2.

Apart from the video & audio excellence, I especially enjoyed two things that were different about it (the restoration from 2007):

1. "I want more LIFE, Father!"

2. Zhora's retirement. OMG they got Joanna Cassidy, after 25 years, to re-do the "crashing through the glass" sequence. I was always taken aback by the too-obvious stunt woman made-up to look like her in past versions.

Fan-tastic. Hadn't watched an HD-DVD in years but I will look for more of these gems.

I watched Bourne Identity Monday using an LG BH200, it played great. The BH200 has been my primary player in the home theater for both HD DVD and Blu-ray since 2008 despite the fact I have better players for both formats. I need to start watching my Warner HD DVDs, I may have dozens that have gone bad and won't know it until I try to watch them. I may have watched a half dozen HD DVDs this year, no more than that but I own about 350 total.

I watched my HD-DVD of "Carlito's Way" last night, one of those discs I bought on sale way-back-when without knowing anything about the movie, and enjoyed the heck out of it. There were a few (a lot?) of moments where I thought "geez Brian DePalma is copying himself again" stylistically but in the end I realized that I always like Al Pacino, and Sean Penn was surprising to me in this.

Reminded me of Donnie Brasco which was another "blind buy" and which I enjoyed. Both highly recommended to fans of either crime stories or Pacino!

Was DB on HD-DVD? And if so, was it the extended edition?

I'm sorry--I misspoke. It was an ordinary DVD of DB that I'd gotten/watched, and not the EE.

That makes sense...especially since I now remember that BRASCO was a Sony disc. Would have been pretty newsworthy if they released it on HD-DVD!

Yeah I'd do this --> biggrin.gif

Except that since the format war fiasco, when the name "Sony" is brought-up I usually do this --> mad.gif
