"Freezing in the middle of the movie", especially in re: DVDs, suggests the player is having problems with the layer change. Could be a focussing problem, or dirt on the lens, or on the disc, or that the player is having trouble tracking at the outer edge of the disc (it tracks inside-to-outside then changes layers there) and if either the disc is warped (not likely) or the transport has aged/weakened (more likely) playback can suffer.

Watched my "Polar Express" HD-DVD (Warner) this evening. It played perfectly and was thoroughly enjoyable.

Update: subsequently watched the Universal combo HD-DVD "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas". It hiccuped once in chapter 6, so I cleaned the disc and then it played all the way through just fine.

Happy to hear you guys not having trouble. Wish I could say the same. My issues aren't hardware related since my problem discs are still problem discs regardless of the player I try but the studios we're stand up enough to swap me for blu copies. Good customer service is so rare these days.

I watched all of the first season of Star Trek. All discs worked with no problems. Good because it isn't the cheapest thing available on Blu-ray and it wasn't the cheapest thing on HD-DVD either.

The two things I noticed. Load times on older players (Blu-ray included) are so much slower than players of today. Also with Star Trek there was a bug that if you left the episode screen running for too long, it would try to play the episode you selected but fail and return you to the screen. I had to reload the disc to fix that.

I got a copy of the 1st season too and all discs worked just fine

as well. Yes, loading times are quite long in comparison to the

newest players but watching the bad make-up of Spock and

Bones on the first episodes thanks HD is priceless :-)

Yesterday (tried) to watch Poseidom, but both copies that I have

are rotten ... damn it! Prior to that I could enjoy Blade Runner

- Final Cut without problems.

Cheers, Meriade.

Watched about 6 Warner HD DVDs in the last two days, every one played perfectly. Hopefully this is all more isolated than it seems.

This old thread deserves a bump. I played my Warner title of "V for Vendetta" and it was perfect, thankfully. First time played, first time having seen the movie. Great Movie!!!!

For a long time i didn't saw movies on my Toshiba XD-E1. Last nicht I thought I give it a try with a wrapped like new Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut HDDVD and it locked the player @1:19:10 Chapter 18 to 19.
Did anyone has success exchanging any Warner Bros Disc into a Blu-Ray by Warner in US. Did someone had success in Europe, Germany. Thanx.

I've been having more and more freeze-ups/error won't play disc messages on my HD-DVDs. I haven't been paying attention to exactly which ones over the last year until I tried playing my trusty BladeRunner Final Cut HD-DVD, which I've viewed many times. It stopped playing and I got the error code with the long number on screen. I didn't write down the error code number as I presume it's probably one others have seen.

This was a huge bummer as I'm just about to show BladeRunner to my son for the first time and I sure don't want the experience ruined.

I wondered if it was my Onkyo HD DVD player starting to go bad or the discs.

I see BladeRunner is a Warner release so does this sound like the same issue everyone else is having here?

That's a bummer. I don't think I have too many Warner Brothers HD DVDs left, but I guess I need to cross my fingers when I play any HD DVDs at this point? Or just WB disks ?

I got one of those dreaded 4xxx "Cannot play disc" errors near the beginning of Matrix Reloaded, and when I re-started the disc, it played-thru the bad spot but then errored again a couple minutes later so I abandoned it. Played another HD-DVD instead (Tremors) and it was perfect.

I have never watched the Matrix Reloaded disc before so don't know "disc problem" or "player problem" but I am running old 2.7 firmware on my HD-XA2 and there are at least 3 new ones finalizing with 4.0 so am thinking to update to 4.0.

Has anyone here ever had this problem w/Matrix trilogy? Has anyone here ever had a disc playback problem solved by updating firmware?

EDIT: Tried ripping the disc--it is definitely very BAD with many dozens of errors although I can see nothing visually wrong with it. Wish I knew if it was bad-from-Day-1 or if it deteriorated like discussed here but can't say for sure. Anyway still no need for me to update firmware I guess.

I haven't had a lot of time to watch them, but after trying to watch all the Harry Potter movies in order it seems like Warner had a serious problem manufacturing these.<br><br>
Long story short, one copy of the first movie was defective, freezing up in the middle (I replaced it with a good one), and went through THREE copies of the 2nd one- I have four different players which I tried these on to verify that the problem was with the disc- again, the discs were bought brand-new and were clean with no scratches. Being a bit concerned that such a large number of discs would do that, I started randomly pulling other dual-layer HD-DVDs manufactured by Warner and chapter-skipping all the way through them- so far I've found FOUR other defective discs (Superman, Training Day, The Fugitive and Swordfish.) I'm going to have to check at least 5 discs every day now until I've checked them all, while I still have a chance of finding replacement copies. (I've heard Warner has been replacing defective HD-DVDs with Blu-Rays so I'm going to try and get that out of them, but still want functioning HD-DVD copies as I'm an obsessive collector.) I'd be REALLY mad if I'd paid full price for these and just now got around to watching them!</p>
I don't know if this is related but can HDDVD be converted to Vudu? I have a bunch of these I would like converted to digital. I don't know if all Walmarts do this or only selected ones.

Yes, at least the WalMart I use does. Supposedly VUDU has an unwritten policy treating HDDVDs as if they were BDs. Create a VUDU account if you haven't already, go to http://www.vudu.com/disc_to_digital.html to generate your list, take it and your discs to WM. Not all titles are VUDU authorized, so you may not be able to register all of your titles.

I think I'm the only who has ever done this at this particular WalMart, using any kind of disc that is, so it was a bit of a learning curve for them. I've gone back a couple of times now with other HDDVDs and DVDs and its a much smoother process now.

I'll be darned. My Matrix Reloaded doesn't play at all. What a shock! Of course the Matrix plays perfectly from beginning to end without a glitch, as does the Revolutions one.

This is another case where a single disc in a box set has died.

Yikes I wonder how many of us got burned in this way i.e. it was likely bad from Day 1.

I did watch Troy the other night (a white ring WB, the extended Director's cut of 3h20m plus extras), and it was perfect...

I suppose I can't watch Revolutions until I've seen Reloaded. Yeah I'm the one guy on Planet Earth who has never seen these movies...

All of these played fine when I purchased them. I played Blade Runner at least a dozen times.

They even die in the package. I bought "Robin Hood" a few months ago still shrink-wrapped. The player didn't even recognize it as an HD-DVD disc.

There have been few if any failures from Universal releases. I'm checking "Children of Men" my last Universal combo disc (you know, the ones everyone complained about) right now.

OK I misunderstood. I honestly can't say that I've ever watched any of my HD-DVDs with perfect playback, and then later watched it again and had failures. After trying to watch the Matrix Reloaded disc (from the fancy green box set) the other week, I put it into my PC and IsoPuzzle reported it was more or less completely hosed i.e. multiple errors in multiple places such that there is "no hope" for recovery. Physically the disc is perfect, with not-a-trace of any imperfections when examined visually...

I did watch my Blade Runner a year or two ago and it was awesome/perfect and given it is one of my favorites I guess I'd better back it up huh!!!! before it fails...

I did get a bad Universal "For the Love of the Game" but I think it was bad-from-day-1 and not a rot/failure issue.

You inspired me scowl to get-out my beloved BR box set to make a backup, and whaddya know, there inside is a BD-25, the backup I made almost exactly a year ago! "A mind is a terrible thing to lose, which is why I keep logs" and sure enough, I had been able to re-mux the entire movie, with all 5 audio tracks (THD, 3 dir comm, 1 DD) onto one disc, with (oddly) the remuxed Blu-ray coming out 2GB larger than the 19GB original HD-DVD!?!?!?! Lotsa overhead in blu-ray muxes, I guess...

For grins I'm gonna re-rip the original HD-DVD to make certain it hasn't degraded--it certainly LOOKS BAD visually i.e. with fogging under the surface layer. EDIT: Happily, the Disc 1 Final Cut ripped again w/zero errors using IsoPuzzle.

Heck I might make an M-DISC of the thing, I love it so much, then it will last 1,000 years.

Yeah I've been one of the puzzled skeptics here cuz I've had NO failures (that I know of). Recently I watched Disc One (Final Cut) of the great, classic Blade Runner and it played great, but when I read about "fogging" and look again in my 5-Disc case I do see fogging, and the Disc 1 itself frankly looks like it's made some rental store rounds or some doggone thing like that with a few scratches and some (so far surface) fogginess. So I've copied it to my HDD and will back it up.

It seems to me that quite some time ago I tried to figure out which of the Warner discs might be EXCLUSIVE TO HD-DVD and at that time in my collection there was only Mutiny on the Bounty which I believe since has made it to Blu-ray.

Do there remain any HD-DVDs in our collections that can not be had on BD???
