Having gone thru my Blade Runner box set completely now by ripping all the discs to PC, I found the following:

Disc 1 HD-DVD The Final Cut: No errors. I backed it-up to Blu-ray format
Disc 2 DVD only Dangerous Days: Errors. Unable to back it-up as a result but at least I watched the majority of it
Disc 3 HD-DVD Three prior versions: No errors. I backed it-up to computer HDD
Disc 4 DVD only Enhancement Archive: No errors. Backed it-up to DVD
Disc 5 HD-DVD Workprint: Errors. Unable to back it up as a result

I have not had big problems with my white ring discs to this point and so it is a disappointment to learn I too have "the problem". I do wonder if the issues are related to the obvious out-gassing of the disc cases i.e. my discs are oddly fogged too and while I can clean Much of the fogginess out, the errored discs can't be completely resurrected.

The Criterion rot issue made me be more alert to my HD-DVD collection, I knew previously that my Planet Earth HD-DVDs had problems playing in some sections that before were playable so I looked at the discs and they all had milky blotches on them that seemed under the surface. Is that the typical look of this HD-DVD rotting problem?

Also is there any current company redress to this issue?

On a whim I loaded-up the DVD "Dangerous Days" and using IsoPuzzle I was able to read the last of the bad sectors on it. So I am able to back it-up after all.

Not sure why it worked today but I'm glad for it.

I suppose I ought to look at my Planet Earth set next--have never watched any of these.

Found this thread via Google. I'm trying to rip my HD DVD collection via makemkv and I am having trouble with WB discs. Medium Error: 1090. Everything else works, but my Warner discs fail time and time again. Skimming the thread, I am guessing a solution was never found?

when they give that error, they are the infamous bad discs (usually warner). no solution. they're gone

The only good news is that nearly everything that was released on HD-DVD has also been released on Blu-ray now. The releases are often cheap, although not as cheap as the HD-DVD's I bought after the format was discontinued.

I think the only HD-DVD exclusive left is a season of Smallville.

NOW: my post on AVS Forum.

The Bad news is some of HD-DVD had better pq most often the Universal ones and a few of my Universals got rot marks on them and have sector errors. Figures the WB Excalibur (non-dwarf edition) went bad on me as did Willy Wonka and Enter the Dragon which although hardly that good pq I prefer them to the smoothed over BDs.

The rotting Planet Earth and the Blade Runner Collection really hurts price wise.

I haven't lost a single Universal title yet. I played Excalibur (a WB disc) last month with no problems.

Well I hope you backed Excalibur up cause if it has the same date and manufacturer ID as mine it is only a matter of time not if.

If it goes I'll just buy the Blu-ray like I did with the rest of them.

From what I have read makemkv is a transcoder meaning it will re-encode the HD-DVD video which is a bad idea.

A better idea is using a program with disc error handling abitities like Unstoppable Copier (completely free and no ads/nagware):
http://www.roadkil.net/program.php/P...pable%20Copier

And then using the free DumpHD available at doom9 and make sure to get the keys, pm me if you cannot find them.

I have recovered several lightly rotted HD-DVD using this method (thanks to my 360 HD-DVD drive), discs with more then light rotting with this method is unrecoverable unfortunately.

I finally found BackupHDDVD (at sourceforge) and will try it out.
