I was a bit frustrated about my hd-dvd collection biting the dust so I decided to convert them to blu-ray. It's not that tricky, if you feel like it try it.
I'm not selling anything here.
Here are the requirements..
- PC with Windows & Xbox HD-DVD drive plugged to your PC via USB cable.
If one wanted to convert the blue ray files that this procedure created into .mkv files (and keep them on a server) to be played by a media streamer client, what would be the next step?

at step 4, before burning, you have media files playable from VLC. If you really want MKV, you can use any tools that already work to transcode from m2ts to mkv.I personally use DVDFab...
There is an alternative..
- You could probably select DEMUX at step #3 instead of BLURAY. That will leave you with the audio and video
Sorry to bump this thread, but this is a much more complicated method than necessary. Slyoft AnyDVD plus Clown BD gives you everything you are talking about here and is much easier to setup and use than what you describe.

ClownBD works perfectly with HD DVD. The name may say BD, but it does HD DVD just fine, and a lot less steps than in the first post.
I think it is a perfect solution to guarantee and future proof your HD DVD collection. You end up with an HD DVD and a BDR Disc.
As a collector of failed formats, this keeps you from having to keep a bunch of HD DVD players around the house. You could have one HD player in your main area and have a BD player everywhere else you might want to watch a disc--including the car as BD players are becoming available.
I am not paying for AnyHD-DVD when I already paid plenty for AnyDVD. They want stupid money to upgrade. However, I was able to get DVDfab at a huge discount many moons ago, so...
How exactly to do this? I was just thinking about it the other day. I'd love to back up my HD-DVD's that look inferior on Blu-Ray (many titles, such as U571, have had excessive DNR added on top for the Blu-Ray release).
I honestly have no clue where to begin. Supposedly DVDfab isn't compatible with HD-DVD.
I'd love some actual directions on this, if someone could oblige me. Thanks!
P.S. I do not have a DVD-ROM drive so to do this I will have to purchase one. That there is an expense, but one worth taking, I suppose. Just thought I'd mention that.
Not much interest in this kind of thing anymore, as you might imagine.
In January, I posted this in Assassin's thread:
"It's probably not worth a whole "Guide," but there must be a couple of us who are interested in backing up our HD DVD collection, and I haven't been able to find much information about that. I have, despite that, been reasonably successful.
I have an XBOX 360 HD player. I'm using Clown_BD, which requires Java runtime (JRE), eac3to, tsMuxeR and ImgBurn (all free), and AnyDVD (not free). Installation is relatively straight-forward, and links to the other programs (besides AnyDVD) are provided by Clown_BD.
The end result is a BD-structure folder and, if desired, an ISO file. I now have, for example, a BD of my Eagles Farewell Tour, in DTS-HD MA. And, of course, a new category in my media collection."
There was absolutely no interest, so you're pretty much on your own, though Clown_BD is here:
AnyDVD is only for DVD. It has nothing to do with BD or HD-DVD. That would require a new purchase, which I am not wiling to do, especially since I already paid for DVDfab.
I'd give a back rub for a little more information on how to do this.

I use dvdfab for bluray, but it can't process hd-dvd.. why not install the trial of anydvd-hd to process the few ones that you have. Once they are extracted to hard drive you don't need it anymore.

Software was all free and given HD-DVD encryption had pretty much stopped development, there were no titles it could not handle. The only problem was sometimes the aacskeys program would fail because the keys for the HD-DVD drive had been revoked and you had a one time job to flash new drive firmware. That could be scary.
Another choice is makemkv which is free and rips BD and HD-DVD's to MKV (without additional compression) which can be demuxed and muxed back to a m2ts format for easier play in media players etc.

Download and install DVDFab's "Passkey" program. It handles HD-DVD, and the "lite" version is free. Use it to rip the HD-DVD to your hard drive, then process from there.
Thanks for the additional info. I am looking for an HD-DVD-rom drive now and will hopefully have one in my hands by the end of the month. Then it's software experimentation time.
If you use DVDFab Passkey, will a BD-R drive in your computer see (and read the data from) the HD-DVD disc or do you still need an X-Box DVD drive connected to your computer?
