Star Trek from amazon.ca arrived.

Picked up 4 used titles at MovieStop using b3G1 free sale. Paid $7.28 each after GameStop Edge discount. Traded one dupe for Doom from local Craigslist poster.

Pre-Orders include the 5 free from Toshiba and BBC Planet Earth from PBS (fingers crossed for all 6).

Brett

I just got my 5 free HD-DVD and it was a 2/5 score.
If Babel and Charlie and the chocolate factory was in your pick you should get them, infortunately there's not many HD-DVD left and they are sending whatever they have.
Syriana, The thing & Firewall were missing, I had Training day, Under siege & Dune instead.
Luckily I had none of those wrong titles.
Anyone knows where I can buy a brand new "The thing" HD-DVD? I'm in Canada and there's only used one at amazon.ca. (I like to "buy it new at" and pair it with another movie to save the shipping)

You can't like all the movies out on hd-dvd.

There's over 700 unique HD DVD releases worldwide, and that's just the 'English friendly' ones. Tormand buys a lot of imports.

Yeah I have a "few" imports I have started buying the non english friendly ones now (just had a friend send me about 8 Japanese language/Sub only discs) and I ordered 3 German only discs last week..

For the comment about why so many, Yes I just like to watch movies. I do 2 things as a hobby..Watch movies and Play with computers. My PC is pretty maxxed out right now so I have all my PC money diverted to movie money at this point. I have watched probably 90% of my collection and enjoyed every one of them (with the exception of the Wicker Man..) Some I liked better than others, Some were blind buys that I loved (Das Parfum is WONDERFUL, Taking Lives was very good, King of California was great, etc) and some are movies that have loved for years and wanted them the best way I could get them. I have over 600 laserdiscs still but my SD DVD is dwindling FAST (I have dropped almost 1500 discs in about 8 months). I don't watch 'TV" (but LOVED Heroes on HD DVD--another blind buy to thank HD DVD for) so if I am watching something it is spinning off a disc. I also don't sleep much and have this weird complulsion that if I want to watch something I want to see it 'now" so it is a lot easier if I can just walk in the media room and get what I want and watch it

Ubid has 5 refurbs posted now. $299 + $35 shipping (to me, anyway).

If you have problems w/it, Toshiba CS has been pretty good about taking them back and replacing them with another refurb, or recently, several people have gotten brand new ones to replace the refurbs since they're no longer servicing this model.

Has this been confirmed? The model is a year old, I would hope that they'd service it if the lens were to die a few years from now, even if out of warranty.

Well, that's what CS has been telling people, including me when I called in. And it may only be for XA2 model, which is what I've been following. This may be because they have replacement stock right now and it makes more financial sense to use up this stock before paying a service center to service warranty claims.

Eventually, I'd bet they would turn on their service centers again, especially if it's for out of warranty work that customers would be paying for anyway.

Excuse my newb ignorance, and for going off topic, but why do you say that? Will the players die off after so many hours of play? I've never had this problem with SD-DVD players.

You've never had a SD-DVD player break? I bought a Sony DVD player i 1999 (DVP-S715, I think it was), and that broke in 2004. I also bought a Sony DVD jukebox in 2001. This broke just a couple of weeks ago. Consumer electronics doesn't last forever.

The reason why it's "necessary" to buy a spare HD DVD player if you have a huge HD DVD collection, is that no stores will be selling HD DVD players in the future. If his player breaks for any reason, getting a replacement could be hard. Sure, ebay will still be around, and he'll probably find one there. But odds are that these players will be used (who knows how much time they have left) and overpriced.

Besides - if you have a $5000 movie collection, spending $100 for a spare player is really a pretty cheap insurance against obsoleting the library.

Good point I just ordered one at ebay.ca for 130$ shipped (HD-A3) and I'll still use my HD-A30...
Maybe I'll even buy another back-up and use it in my bedroom. (even if I don't watch movie there)

Tormond is a very similar type of person to me. I pretty much have 2 hobbies: Computers, & Movies. I've got 2 computers that are maxxed out pretty much (one being my HTPC), so I really don't have to worry about having to upgrade them. That means all my PC money is getting diverted into my Movie habit, been that way for nearly 9 months now.

I love watching movies, and love going to see them at the theater.. however more & more I end up having bad experiences in local theaters due to either Poor Focus, improper sound system calibration, or audience interference / noise. This is what primarily started getting me interested in the HiDef DVD scene last year. Now I make a lot of blind buys, more than 85% of them I end up loving, the rest I at least like. I've got about 260 total movies in my collection (counting a meager amound of SD-DVD's) and I am still buying both Blu-ray AND HD-DVD media. I plan to keep exploiting HD-DVD close out sales and inventory clearance sales as long as I can afford to. (Or as long as there are still HD-DVD movies I'm interested in.) Only have 1 import at present, the 2nd Tomb Raider movie that I imported from Germany.

URL Link to my Movie Collection is in my SIGNATURE, I keep it up to date religiously.

I've officially gone PURPLE, thank you LG!
