It is so great to see this disc out now. This is one of my favorite movies and I waited for the first encode with much anticipation. When I saw the first check disc a couple of months ago, the image quality put a big smile on my face. And the kicker: this VC-1 movie is encoded at one of the lowest data rates of any HD DVD movie!

I have yet to watch the the whole thing myself. So some of you are ahead of my on this . But the train scene makes the best resolution chart one can imagine with the crisp likes of the high rise buildings. And the wide glaciers are just breathtaking. As is small details like dirt in the hand (the scene with the blue flower).

If by train scene you mean the climax, yes, I absolutely agree that it looked stunning. The level of detail when Gordon blew the supports off the rails, and the rails fell was fantastic. I found no flaw in the encoding. I saw about two specks of dirt on the actual print, and that was it.

And the sound, wow, what sound. I seem to remember Cj saying he encoded this. We should all give him a big thanks and congrats on a job well done!

I repeat, how are you guys getting a store to sell you this 10 days before its release date?

The format wars are over Primal, you lose - Megatron from Beast Machines (partially)

So long HD-DVD, I will miss you no matter how much I complained about Combo Discs.

This thread is full of posts discussing this. It all comes down to the people working at the particular Target. Some are nice and hook us up, some are jerks and shoot us down. But the process is available on the very first page of the thread.

I have 5 Targets, count em, 5 staked out for tomorrow on my route back to college from my parents house. I hope at least one actually sells me a disc. Wish me luck!

how can they only have 1 copy for each store? what kind of HD DVD roll out is that?

Maybe they are just testing the waters with one copy of each title at most stores? I guess they'll find out they should order more when they go to stock the shelves on Oct 10th and see they already sold the product.

I have a jealousy-fueled hate for each and every one of you scumbags that got an early copy. I'm jinxing you as I type - you will all have your pre-orders for King Kong inexplicably cancelled at the last minute.

Enjoy your HD splendor and True HD goodness, jackasses.

Amir,

To get such a low bit rate for a movie with so much action going on, did it require a lot of hours one on one with human compressionists, or is it more a product of the maturation of the vc-1 encoding tools that it didn't require all that much more oversight by a compressionist then earlier encodes that are at a higher bitrate?

Keep in mind this disc was brand new with some very slight light scratches but it plays flawless (not a single glitch) . I can always buy another one when it comes out on the 10th and besides I feel lucky to have been able to see it already .

PM me if your interested .

Cjplay stated that this was one of the hardest encodings to get right. An awfull LOT of man hours went into it obviously...

Track is 16bit as there is not a single 24bit TrueHD track available on HD-DVD nor will be for quite some time. For technical reasons for that do a search...

I'm sure it sounds gorgeous nevertheless...

I didn't think there were any technical reasons. I thought it depended on the master and only the latest masters were 24bit.

I'm sure it will sound great. Was just curious, especially as Fox are touting 24bit for their boo-ray titles.

I know, that was a pretty big kicker to me as well...

Glad Target was so "generous" and I'm very glad to see reviews on it. Enjoy!

Yes, several weeks, in fact.

Thanks to the Target Tipster my wife and I were able to watch Batman Begins last night. All I can say is wow, probably the best picture and sound I've ever experienced on any format!

Kudo's to WB and the Target Tipster!

I'll be watching it again tonight.

Damn, those Target employees are getting clever. I called a whopping 6 stores to see if I could get my hands on a copy. 4 gave me a no, 1 said they had it and wouldn't sell till next week, but one is actually holding it for me! I can't wait to get it guys!

Just got back from Target and have Batman Begins HD DVD in hand. My HD-A1 is booting up as I type this. Thanks guys for providing the stock number. I called first and they said they had it in stock so I drove over and provided the stock number again, the woman said I'll go in the back and get it. It was $19.99 plus I got an extra 10% off my next purchase from Target.com. What a great day off from work

Thanks for the confirmation and for what sounds like a great job with BB. Cant wait to see it.

Are you able to tell us if WB have any desire to go 20-24bit TrueHD in the future?

I hit 2 Target stores locally and neither of them would sell them to me. Someone must have tipped them off. If anyone is willing to part with their copy I would be happy to paypal the funds over and give you my UPS shipper number. I must get this disc ASAP
