I just got through doing my reviews of 3 of the 4 Weinstein releases and I wanted to give you guys a heads up on an issue that might be a bother for some of you. These discs seem to take a lot longer to load than normal HD DVDs. I am using the HD-A1 and with Wolf Creek and The Matador it took nearly 3-4x's longer for the disc to actually start playing once I loaded it in than a normal HD DVD (which already takes a bit). I haven't tried it on my 360 Add-on yet but I will today and report back. I've sent an email to Genius about it as well, so they will be aware.

So if you buy these discs be REALLY patient when loading. They will play eventually.

Reviews for The Matador, Wolf Creek and Derailed will be up sometime this week.

Kris, I encountered this last night with my copy of Universal's Dune. I'm curious if you've tried playing this and had the same issue?

Chronos is the same way. I noticed the disc surface of Chronos looked different than other HD DVDs (no rainbow-looking reflection). Takes like 15 seconds to play, while loading at 0:00

Vote with your wallet. Don't buy Cinavia-infected Blu-ray Discs! Why pay a premium for pseudo-lossless audio damaged by an intrusive watermark in the audible spectrum?

I don't have Chronos but I have Dune. Dune didn't seem to lag though.

This happened the first time I tried to load kong, but when I reloaded it for the SF it took the normal time.

The real question is how'd they work, any issues I can put up with a little longer if it means flawless playback everytime

I had no issues after the initial load.

I'm not necessarily sure it has "issues," meaning it may actually be doing something during that 15 seconds, and therefore is supposed to do that. Or if not, something like this should be fixable on the v2.1 firmware.

Was really looking forward to 'The Matador'. It may be better to wait for a re-pressed version later, or perhaps the HD-A2 will play the discs w/o issues.

I attempted to play Chronos last night. I got the FBI warning screen, the screen blanks, and nothing more. I let it sit for several minutes. I'm playing it the XBox 360 HD DVD drive. Have had no problems with other HD DVD's. Any suggestions.

I used the A1 but I remember Chronos took forever to load on my machine also. I think it's just an issue with the disc. When it finally did load though it was amazing.

Is your XBOX connected to xbox live? There was an update that went up last week for the addon drive. It had alot of playback issues corrected.

Hmmm....these issues could be something that can never be fixed via firmware if they are what it looks like to me. Not good at all.

Well, I hate to hear this as Derailed was the one release I was looking forward to from Weinstein.

Looking forward to your review Kris, but I sure hate to hear about a studio issue. We need more studios supporting the format, but not if they are going to give HD DVD a black eye.

I will have to go down to the local Blockbuster and actually pay to rent some of these movies because Netflix will not be carrying any of them. Bummer.

TWC has an exclusive deal with Blockbuster. Although it doesn't start until January 1st, Netflix probably wouldn't bother to get any titles in that they could only rent for a month.

Hey, I'm watching the Derailed HD-DVD on the 360HDDVD on a 46" Bravia LCD - is it supposed to look this grainy?.. Very distressing... not pleasant to watch at all

Can they be stopped from renting these? I received "The Matador" from Netflix yesterday (although I haven't checked it) and it shows that "Scary Movie 4" is shipping tomorrow.

So aside from the long load times, there are no other problems right? If that's the case, then it's not really a big deal imo.

Exactly. I'm not sure taking a few more seconds to load would qualify as "issues" to me.
