While returning a few products to BB this morning, I noticed they had Field of Dreams out, so I immeadiately grabbed one and just done watching it.

This release is a MAJOR improvement over my SD-DVD version. Both PQ and AQ are vastly improved. I have the Collector's Edition on SD-DVD.

As far as PQ goes this release is quite strong for a film of its age. I noticed a whole new sharpness to this movie, which I had not seen before. Also everything just seemed more in focus then on the SD-DVD version. When you see scenes of Ray standing in the in-field, the whole picture is in focus, the in-field, out-field (corn field) and the horizon. I saw absolutely no film dirt/debris at any time in this transfer, much like you would find on TFE with Blu-ray. I also saw absolutely no macroblocking at any time and this film has a lot of dark scenes. My only complaint is that there is a fair amount of film grain in the lighter/brighter scenes. I have noticed this pattern on both formats (HD-DVD/Blu-ray) for movies of this age or older.

AQ is too a vast improvement over the SD-DVD version. This movie now makes very good use of the Center Channel. As we all know, this movie has a lot of dialog and it is utilized well in the Center Channel. My favourite improvement is with the overall use of DD 5.1. When you hear the voice say, "If You Buld It, He Will Come," it projects to all 5 speakers and creates this encompassing sound, almost like you hear it from all angles, VERY NICE WORK HERE!! Also any song which is played in the movie seems to have a remastered version. There is a scene where Ray's van is running down the highway and that song comes on and it just sounds so fresh and new!!

Also, this is NOT a Combo as has been reported.

All in all, I highly recommend this upgrade if you are a fan of this film, you will not be disappointed. The PQ and AQ improvements alone are enough, but with all the extras it makes it a no brainer.

People have asked if there are some movies that would make one buy one format or the other. I bought the Panasonic BD a few weeks ago, as there were more BD titles I wanted than HD DVD titles. But Field of Dreams and Forbidden Planet are two of my favorite movies, so I just got an Toshiba A2 in order to see these movies in HD. They should arrive tomorrow.

Which version exactly does it look like a major improvement over? You said the Collector's Edition, but that was the first DVD release, and I think it may even have been non-anamorphic. I'd expect the HD DVD to blow that away, but there was a second release with a new transfer a couple of years ago, and that's the one I have. I'd like someone else to chime in on whether the HD DVD is a major improvement over that release (unless that's actually the one you have).

I've been asked the same question, i.e.............. "People have asked if there are some movies that would make one buy one format or the other."

Field of Dreams hit the spot.
I'm leaving NOW to buy an A2 at BB and purchase that disc.

Thanks for the review Josh.

I got this from Netflix and watched parts of it last night. I'm sure it is an upgrade from the DVD, but overall I think it is a middling title for PQ in HD. Around the 1:27:00 mark there is some interesting pulsing in the picture on the doctor's jacket when he is over by the girl and then in part of the image when he is standing in front of the cornfield.

One of the most memorable parts of this movie to me is still when the credits roll and there is a credit for "The Voice".

SOFT. SOFT. SOFT.

Other than that, it is an upgrade from the DVD.

Sounds like a good benchmark disc. I always wondered if the Toshiba players pass the softer-than-soft test.

Field of Dreams was never reference quality on Standard DVD. The HD is a slight improvement over it in my opinion.

I was really disappointed that http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/fieldofdreams.html gave it a bad review for video quality. So I put in my copy last night just to watch a little bit of it and I ended up watching the whole film from start to finish. I had the first release of this on DVD but not the re-releases. For me it was a nice upgrade in picture quality. After reading that review I was worried but I'm happy with the PQ. It won't blow you away but I'm glad I got it. Plus all the extras that were in the re-releases are present here. A good buy in my opinion.

Did Peter actually watch all of the disc before writing up this review? I ask because he makes some pretty huge-ass mistakes and omissions in the extras section, specifically:

The centerpiece is "From Father to Son: Passing Along the Pastime." Despite the ungainly title, this 40-minute making-of is a notch above most -- I it found both comprehensive and entertaining. The lineup of interviewees is impressive, from the main creative team including director Phil Alden Robinson and co-producers Charles and Lawrence Gordon, to cast members Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Frank Whalley. Of course, the missing link is Kevin Costner, but there is enough production background and behind-the-scenes footage to pick up the slack. Granted, since this doc was originally produced for the laserdisc way back in the late '90s, the material is dated.

First, this (somewhat fluffy) piece never appeared on the laserdisc. And second, I find it difficult to consider it the "centerpiece" of the extras, especially when:

Last but not least, we have the "'Field of Dreams' Scrapbook," which contains a whopping 300 photographs. Production and publicity stills, never-before-scene photos and more -- they are all here.

I honestly have no clue what he's talking about here. Field of Dreams Scrapbook is a 90 minute(!) documentary about the making of the film. It was included on the deluxe LD release, the first DVD edition, and also on a Wal-Mart bonus disc available a couple of years ago.

Anyway, I watched it last night (and cried like a little girl, per usual). For anyone who likes the film and doesn't own it yet, it's a no-brainer. For people who have any of the previous DVD editions, I still think it's a worthy purchase, although it won't blow you away with picture quality. It's mid-tier in that regard. Certainly nothing to complain about, but not awe-inspiring either.

Rachael, Is the color off on this disc, or off in the movie. It reminds me of the orange complaint of DoH but that was actually a production decision to hold some of the look of the TV show.

I never noticed the colour to be so far off in the past on DVD. Maybe it was and I didn't notice. I saw the film in the theatre when it came out and don't recall such but that's some time back. I have no pool of vast knowledge about this film. Maybe somebody else does 'round this joint?
