Art I had the same thing happen to me but a different title. I had played King Kong UK version with no trouble. The next day I popped it in and got the same message. I unplugged the player and tried it again same thing. I took a cotton cloth to the disc ( not that I saw any prints or scratches ) and gave her a quick cleaning and that did it, it worked.

Happy holidays!!

Fifty titles and hundreds of plays this is my second error code. The first was thinking I could play Kong without 2.0.

I'll check in later with any news.

Hopefully you'll find another copy Art. I can only imagine what "The Hulk" will look like on your setup. Enjoy, and Merry Christmas, and since Alan is around, Cheers to the best AV forum on the internet!

I had this issue with V for Ven. and had the disc replaced. I had 2.0 FW and tried cleaning the disc., but no luck. The second disc worked just fine.

Second disc does the same thing. Only two possibilities I can see: 1) my 2.0 from a burned CD from the internet is incompatible 2) a bad run of discs at that store

Just to follow up Art....my 2.0 FW was direct from Toshiba....since I couldn't get an ethernet download to work with my player. I even took it into work and had the IT guys try with no luck.

I have the same problem with KONG, since I updated to 2.0. Tried two versions, still won't play now. Error code0.8/.......something or another.

CHEERS, TC
PS, wonder if a non HDMI feed will work. Have to try the component out to check.

I got this error code on KK yesterday after previously playing it with no serious problems. I have 2.0 installed. No problems with Hulk. Strangely, the error code on KK appeared only after I loaded, selected a scene and then paused.

Wow, that title worked very well here, and has one of the best PQ's I've seen on HD DVD. Maybe your player has issues? BTW: nothing works like the real thing for firmware, Merry Christmas.

It is "WOW" TV!

OK, three hours of assembly and the toys are done ! I bet it's the firmware,it isn't direct from Toshiba.

After reading of all the problems encountered by some after installing firmare 2.0, I decided to stick to 1.4. I therefore spent my Christmas having King Kong, Miami Vice and The Pianist (French release) and being unable to watch them (as indicated above, my HD-A1 did play the Hulk!); I still have to try the Matador. I am now really contemplating upgrading to the HD-XA2 when it's released (I skipped the A2 because it does not have analog outputs).

Art,

The two times an error code popped up on my A1, cleaning the laser pickup cured the problem immediately. I use a phillips CD cleaner with the brushes and a bottle of cleaning solution.

IMO, the Toshibas need a regular cleaning to read disks well. I have cleaned the laser pickup several times with no ill effects. If the A1 does die, I have the four year warranty which would mean a new machine.

The reason Hulk won't play on some players is because there is a text file on the root of the filesystem. That is out of HD-DVD spec. The text file seems to contain the volume and title key of the HD-DVD...

The error is specifically referring to an AACS problem. I wonder if that extra text file is causing an issue for some? Borbus, are saying that the keys are in a plain text file on the disc? That's a HUGE mistake on there part.

It seems to contain something that says it's the title key... here's some of the text file:

// Directory Settings

IN.ROOT=G:\\TheHulk\\TheHulk
OUT.ROOT=G:\\AACS_output\\TheHulk

// Volume ID Setting
[VID]
VID.UNQ_NO=271020061204020202020202

// Title Key Setting

TKF.BIN_FILE=

// Title Key Setting

Three diffrent discs did the same thing in my player but the last disc played in an A2 at Best Buy but not on mine. I ordered a 2.0 from Toshiba which should have been here by Friday or Saturday but didn't make it.

If that doesn't correct it I don't know.

That looks to be exactly what it should NOT be. The key itself may not be the one for the feature. It can be for say the opening Universal logo, but still it looks to be the missing link that is needed for the BackupHDDVD program that has made big news lately. I think I will rent Hulk and do some testing.

Could that key be an encrypted value? It can't be the unencrypted plain text key???

Just FYI, you don't need FW 2.0 to play Hulk. I've got 1.3 and was able to play it all the way through. I even saw that new progress bar when I hit RW or FF. Although, I suppose installing an unofficial release of FW 2.0 could still be causing this if there were some last minute changes in the official release.

If it tells you the encrypted key on error, then AACS really is toast. I really doubt it though...that seems way too mind boggling...

Both are not encrypted.

The second value is the ASCII code for "UNIVERSAL_HD-DVD".

I used the internet 2.0. My thought at this point is the Toshiba version may be different. All I know is the Hulk won't play in my player it runs the logo then gives the error code.

Interstingly ,I got a notice from Toshiba that the 2.0 discs are back ordered !!!!!
