Didn't think a movie this old could pull it off, but High-Def Digest is giving it a BIG THUMBS UP FOR PQ!

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

When it comes to recent remasters of catalog titles, Paramount tends to not be held in the same regard as, say, a Warner. But that is a bit of a crime, as Paramount has really impressed me lately with its next-gen releases. Titles like 'Aeon Flux,' 'Four Brothers' and in particular 'Reds' were real stunners, and now 'Black Rain' joins such elite ranks. Considering that this is an eighteen year old film, I just wasn't expecting a very phenomenal image, but I was truly blown away -- this new print of 'Black Rain' is just about spotless.

The 2.40:1 widescreen, 1080p/VC-1 image is clean, smooth and shockingly free of grain and dirt. Colors, though not as over-the-top as those on most modern movies, are excellent. Stability and consistency are first-rate, with nice bold reds and blues particularly impressive; fleshtones, too, are pitch perfect, despite a heavy use of filtering by director of photography Jan De Bont. Detail and dimensionality are also clearly superior to just about any remaster I've seen for a film of this vintage.

Any complaints I do have are very minor. I noticed an instance or two of a dropout on the print, but maybe only two or three times -- hardly cause for alarm. There is also some very slight noise in a couple of shots, always involving billowing smoke (a Ridley Scott trademark), but it's so minimal as to be irrelevant. In short, 'Black Rain' looks fantastic.

KEEP BOTH FORMATS ALIVE!
This translates to better PQ & AQ.

I'm not one to complain about cover art, but if I was, I would be complaining about that cover.

Good news about the transfer and the extras though. I had this back on VHS bu skipped th DVD. Perhaps this will give me an excuse to pick up the HD-DVD now.

Um .... I believe the point was that the age of a movie should have little to no bearing on the quality of the HD DVD. I just watched Casablanca the other day. 'Nuff said.

Cheers,

Definitely getting this one. Ridley Scott is one of my faves. Glad to read this is a grade A transfer. Paramount might be slow at getting into the game but they release top notch transfers.

Absolutely love this movie...and thrilled to be going from a non-anamorphic DVD to an HD DVD.

Still wondering about the 2 disc HD DVD set that Japan is getting, though. Anyone ordering it?

This is one of the only Ridley Scott movies I have never gotten around to seeing. I'll blind buy it and hope for the best.

I cancelled my order when the Nov release date was pushed back.

Still tempted to see what's on that second disc.

Highdefdigest are stoned at all times. Why else would they praise the PQ of Reds? That doesn't mean Black Rain won't look great, it's just not guarenteed because they say so.

Whats wrong with Reds? It's a fantastic transfer of an older film.

DTS-ES Matrixed 6.1 Surround option is included

The reviewer notes, "Despite the presence of the extra surround channel", well true but it's still not discreet, only matrixed.

Sounds great though. Can't wait for this one.

Some members love to stir the pot with over the top comments.....let's face it, no one would describe his style as subtle.

Seriously, I do wonder at times if Fett's display is in need of a calibration. Too many times he's in complete disagreement with what would be described as a reference title.

Hearing this movie was coming out on HD-DVD was one of the reason's I bought my Xbox 360 add-on. That new DVD release teases me in the stores, but I can't wait for the HD-DVD!

Yes, but Casablanca was painstakingly restored at a HUGE cost to Warner. Despite 35mm film having plenty of detail for 1080p video, if studios don't make new high quality masters the older movies will suffer.
