One particular title whose ranking I find interesting is the NIN concert release. While you'd think that something like that would be tailor made for the PS3 demographics, the HD-DVD has a 3x higher ranking, and has had a higher ranking from the get go. I'm not sure what is any conclusions can be drawn from that, but I would have expected the BD version to at least be close to the HD-DVD in ranking.

Wow, what happened last night? Matrix up for preorder or what?

Nope ...people, especially on the HD DVD side, were going crazy with the $5 coupon on every single order if you are a Amazon prime member. One HD DVD fan ordered 45 discs ...I kid you not. He ordered one disc at a time to take advantage of the coupon.

That just proves that current release prices are too high and need to be dropped.

HD-DVD goes up, and now all of the sudden these numbers are inconclusive. Last week everyone was touting these numbers as fact that Blu-ray was the clear winner.

I wonder what people will say next week. Sheesh.

Ummm maybe because its just one day? Until you can see a trend, these Amazon numbers are useless. A day does not make a trend.

Yep, these graphs are just going to go up and down for a long time, and every time one side comes out on top, it will be hailed as conclusive proof that the other is finished. It seems pretty clear, as least from the way I see it, that we're in this for the long haul and are going to have to get used to a market in which two competing formats exist.

Honestly, You need look no further than highdefdigest.com...open the Blu-Ray release date section in one tab and the HD DVD in another. HD DVD looks absolutely anemic right now. I got the 360 drive, but I will also be getting the PS3 in due time as well. I care about content and for right now anyway HD DVD is dropping the ball. If they keep this up then they *will* lose the format war.

Well, it all started from a misleading thread title. There is no comeback, because HD-DVD is still going strong and will continue to do so. No comeback is needed.

Blu won :(
No big deal, I don't buy movies anymore anyway. Time to move on.

only fools use amazon ranking to prove a point for either side. please wake me up when online sales are same as retail sales.

the only sales that prove a point are departed and casino royale on amazon. since they are in the top 30. and will likely also be on top in retail sales numbers.

but the others numbers i simply laugh at. the fluxation between those numbers are simply way to high.

so please wake me up when bluray or hd-dvd have at least 10 titles of their format in the top 50 and it might get intresting on amazon. until then i just laugh at salesrankings of movies like hollywoodland and babel which didnt made a dime at the movie boxoffice, but are in the top 10 amazon sales ranking.

all this talk of comparing sales numbers and etc is downright ridiculous, is it like people can feel better at night that their well under 500$ HD-DVD won't be a doorstop soon ?

reality folks, neither format is going anywhere for years, for one to leave someone would actually have to care about one or the other, the small niche that is high-end HD literate HT doesn't constitute as "caring" or a base of popularity

So no its not just because of some amazon pricing error. :P

I think that the pre-order of this concert would be heavily weighted on the HD-DVD side while the in-store sales would favor BluRay if the PS3 demographic has a large influence. I doubt many PS3 owners are addicted to these forums and know the exact date of every pre-order for BluRay movies.

Do the DVD Empire numbers suggest HD DVD is going tow to toe with Blu Ray?

-OR-

Do the numbers suggest that more HD DVD owners shop at DVD Empire?

There are two sides to every set of numbers, so in this case (an internet vendor that may acct for <1% of all HD sales), the significance is non-existant to either side.

We'll never see numbers that tell the whole story simply because they are not available.

The only valid conclusion to the DVD eEmopire numbers is that software sales are close for purchasers that visit DVD Empire. No significance to the war in general.

And here we see the problems inherent with statistics. Stats can always be manipulated by protagonists from either side of an argument to suit their own means.

Trust me ...by tomorrow, DVDEmpire will show Blu-Ray with a larger lead. It was like this last week and its a trend I noticed with DVDEmpire.

Is there some specific reason to believe HD DVD owners prefer DVD Empire? If not I do not see why DVD Empire's (or Amazon's, or any other major retailer's) sales cannot be considered to be a reasonable random sample.

That said, I believe the market for HD media is far too small for anyone to gauge properly which side is currently more successful. IMO it is a matter of years, not months before this clears up.

Man there sure are a lot of BR trolls in the HD Software section.. So last week victory was declared by the BR Fanboys because of the numbers and now numbers don't matter. Which is it? I will never be ignorant or naive enough to declare a victory because of a few weeks worth of data. The fact is that HD-DVD has had an empty release schedule yet, it is still neck and neck with BR. What will happen if a major title is released?

Why??

Are BR sales magically better at the end of the week?

I see no reason to assume that they would move in any specific direction.

It's not too hard to know the date of the HD DVD releases.... There's like one a MONTH! How hard is it to remember that?
