Does anyone have the bitrate and specs for Blade Runner (Final Cut)? I wanted to see how it compares on HD DVD versus Blu Ray.

My first attempt at doing anything with an HD DVD. I can't even watch them on the useless old computer I have to use at the moment!

I see with this disc at least, all the EVOs have nice, fairly descriptive filenames instead of the bland numbered M2TS's of Blu-ray. That's an advantage I hadn't heard of.

I'm curious: from the list it seems HD DVD movies are only ever split into 2 parts at the most? Is this at the layer change?

This'll be a bit of a mess since there isn't a consolidated tool like BDInfo. If I may ask, why are some of the disc sizes in the list reported as estimates? I would've thought that was always the easiest info to grab.

eac3to's reported length for 2 EVO files: 1:59:55
VPLST000.XPL: titleDuration="01:59:47:50"

1:59:55 matches the Blu-ray, but I believe we should go with the playlist's duration since that's what players actually use for the movie? I'll have to check later what isn't played, if anything...

Already in the OP but estimated:
Code:
A Scanner Darkly VC-1 1:40:17 12,311,480,320*~15,062,399,624 16.36 ~15.40 DDPlus 5.1 640Kbps No
The subtitles together take up 199MB, I'm guessing those weren't taken into account? Though that doesn't account for the entire difference.

Again eac3to's reported EVO runtime is longer than the playlist, this time by 5 seconds.

Code:
                                                                                        Total Video

EDIT: The sizes are correct but I somehow messed up the bitrate calculation for this one. AVBR should say 14.32 and total bitrate should say 18.28. The other VBR bitrates (TrueHD and subtitles) are probably wrong as well...

Code:
                                                                                        Total Video

Despite the misleading descriptions, selectable="true" and forced="false" on the final set of subs.

So we know Warner wastes BD50s like no tomorrow, but how about HD30s? They sure did here.

(source for capacities)
Max capacity of HD30: 33,393,473,536 bytes
Disc size - The Reaping: 15,494,648,189 bytes
Max capacity of HD15: 15,076,554,752 bytes
Space used beyond HD15: 398MB
Space remaining on HD30: 16.6GB

Do note that the session size "fills" the disc a bit more at 17,163,091,968 bytes.

The movie on the DVD side is only at 4.27Mbps according to DVD Bit Rate Viewer, for whatever that's worth.

Planet Earth box states 1080i for main feature and special features, but the PE eps are actually 1080p23.976.

For discs 1-3, the first and third eps of each disc are standalone files and the second ones are split, so I put the asterisk in... The "Credits" on disc 4 are a separate file and show up under the "Episodes" menu, but the file doesn't play for the main playlist so I've excluded it from the size/bitrate calculation.

Talk about wasting a dual layer disc - the packaging and AnyDVD state that Disc 5 is an HD DVD-30 despite being less than 15GB!

The encodes appear identical to the US release judging from the Blu-ray's bitrates. Each one is off by 0.02Mbps. Except for disc 4 - which is accounted for by me not including the credits in the calculation.

Regarding the differing timecodes for HD DVD and Blu-ray...

23.976(...) fps * 1.001 = 24 fps
2:32:17 * 1.001 = 2:32:26

HD DVD's timecodes for 23.976 fps content are reported as what they would be were the content played back at 24 fps, i.e. 0.1% faster. So.. Blu-ray uses drop-frame timecodes and HD DVD uses non-drop-frame timecodes?

The Blu-ray has the same VC-1 video but 192kbps audio according to the other thread:
Code:
The Omega Man VC-1 1:38:00 16,716,244,992 18,210,416,064 22.74 19.97 DD AC3 1.0 192Kbps
So why did the HD DVD get shafted with 1/3 the audio bitrate for its lowly mono track?

In the list already but with an estimated disc size for some reason? Oh well, I also figured I'd check out the -analyzebitdepth feature of eac3to. "This audio track has a constant bit depth of 24 bits."

Hmm, okay. I actually thought that DD Plus was just a different container.

One that's not on either list yet... Blind bought this and actually enjoyed it a lot.

The "In-Program Experience" on episode 1 is 480p30. Likewise for the PiP on Transformers and 300 (which is strange since 300's PiP is the movie without effects - I guess they duplicated frames). What happens to these when you set your HD DVD player to output 24p?

Also, episodes 5 and 7 have DDPlus 2.0 192kbps commentary tracks.

Warner must tell their compressionists to stick with a certain bitrate for a title regardless of how much space or bandwidth is available.

Watched Transformers the other day on an A1, HDMI on my Denon 2307CI and I noticed it was encoded in DD+. I thought WOW sounds great (LPCM @ 96kHz) DD+.... Does anyone have the BD ver. of Transformers? I hear it is encoded in TrueHD is it also 96KHz..? I'll have to rent it this weekend and check it out...

Steve

Checkout the Transformers thread under BD software, but if you don't want to...

The consensuses is that there is just a tiny bit more of everything in the TrueHD sound track. Enough to get some HD DVD owners to double dip, but not so much that everyone who has it on HD DVD and also owns a BD player is convinced that it's worth the upgrade.

My personal opinion is that a double dip from HD DVD to Blu is more of a vanity purchase than anything else.

TrueHD = DTS-MA = LPCM
Low Bit Rate AVC > Low Bit Rate VC-1
High Bit Rate VC-1 > High Bit Rate AVC
MPEG-2 = Great for DVD and that's about it.

Not sure if you're still updating the list but figured I'd add one before I sell it. I'm not sure exactly how the EX and ES tracks are supposed to be listed or whether the DTS is still considered to be "HD" even though eac3to didn't label it as such, but the bitrates are all listed so hopefully that's enough.

Code:
                                                                                        Total Video

DNR'd, but higher audio bitrate than their Blu-ray. They actually sport slightly different menus as well.

Sorry for replying to an old thread, but which program(s) were used to produce the three outputs posted here (title info, audio info, disc info)? Looked through and saw the question asked but never answered. Thanks.

Planning on going HD DVD-free so I recently started re-encoding the Star Trek season 1 HD DVDs to BDs.

According to eac3to, the 2.0 track is actually 192kbps AC3 (regular Dolby Digital) and not DD+ as shown in this thread.

Not that I was planning on using the lossy 2.0 track when there's a lossless track that's mostly faithful to the original mono, I just found it somewhat interesting.

Edit: strangely enough, the audio for the Starfleet Access segments is DD+, although still only 192kbps.

Anyone know the disc specs for The Sting? Total size is all I really need.

EDIT (after 2 days): Tap tap tap... is this mic on? I think I'm typing to an empty room!

Has anyone seen a list of titles which were issued with DD+ (or even regular 5.1) on HD-DVD, but have TrueHD or DTS-HD on the Blu-Ray versions (this seems to happen with Universal titles quite a bit)?

Is the software used to gather this information available somewhere?

The information looks a lot like the BDInfo program being used for Blu Ray
