I just got an email from DVD Empire that Relentless Enemies has now shipped. I thought it wasn't released until Tuesday? I have never pre-ordered so maybe it is normal to ship a few days early. I have not bought a new HD-DVD in six weeks. I can't wait for this one to arrive.

I know Greg. I'm having a HD DVD drought as well.

Have you seen the DVD version of this? Is it worth a blind buy for a
Nature Show lover like me?

Yesterday someone posted a link to a preview of this title. It is probably only a page or two back. Other than that I know nothing.

What I am going on is the first HD tv show I watched on my Z4 about 14 months ago. It was a nature documentary in Africa and I remember seeing how detailed the face of a male lion was. I also remember seeing a cheetah chase down a gazelle in real time, not slow motion. It truly looked like my wall was a window to Africa. In all honesty, HD-DVD movies look great, but the best HD picture I have ever seen is 16:9 HD-TV. Often movies are shot for mood where as nature documentaries are often about a big glorius picture.

I'll probably save this title for next Friday night so I won't be able to give any feedback until then.

No doubt.

Movies have film grain for effect and then intensive color grading and other stuff during post production. When you watch a HD sport show or nature film it looks eye popping even on Broadcast HD TV.

I'm certianly going to enjoy some of these "clear" films. I'll search for that review now.

I will definitely be picking this up. No directors changing tones or making the film grainy. Just pure HD DVD of Lions kicking arse!

$24.99 plus tax. I can NEVER get Frys to price match Target, or Walmart, like Best Buy will. Frys policy is to call and see if they have it in stock, which of course Target never does. Only a buck more than the Target.com price anyway.

If you haven't already, I would give them a call and see if they have it in their system, save yourself a trip. None at the Fountain Valley Frys.

Just got home--picked up my copy of Relentless Enemies at the Industry Frys.

They still had about 5 copies left, so if you are looking for them--you know where to find it.

PQ is disappointing. Many scenes are noisy and grainy, others are soft, and still others are very flat. There are a few eye-popping scenes, but not many. Audio is decent, but the center channel is way too loud in the mix.

I haven't seen Eternal Enemies, but the same duo filmed what I consider the best presentation on Lions that I've ever seen:

Eternal Enemies: Lions & Hyenas Video & DVD

This is a pretty old film, but the presentation is awesome. I actually emailed National Geographic a couple of years ago imploring them to release it on DVD. Hey, it looks like it worked.

Anyway, I really hope that they release this on HD-DVD. You need to watch it if you haven't seen it.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling that thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a...

That's what I was expecting. For nature docs, its really difficult to sustain a constant tone in terms photography, and HDcams to tend to have their quirks especially in brightly lit sunlight. Actually the Discovery HD animal stuff looks quite good - but I prefer the content of NatGeo.

I am saving my copy for a Friday night viewing. I am a bit disappointed to hear PQ isn't all that great.

As mentioned, the best HD I have ever seen has been nature programming on Discovery Channel or INHD. HD movies on HD-DVD are often very good, but are shot in a style that often tones down color, or shot in dimly lit studios or locations. I was hoping this would be big glorious picture but it sounds like it won't be.

Mine is on the way home from Amazon but I got it also from Netflix yesterday. I too am dissapointed in PQ. It certainly wasn't anything to write home about. It was soft, grainy (I'm a grain hater) and no where near as sharp as I would have hoped for. I'm sending the unopened Amazon copy right back for a refund. I hope that Planet Earth will have better PQ.

I've watched Relentless Enemies twice now. Once on a 720 projector at 100", and on a 61"1080 RPTV. Both DLP.

Couple of thoughts, or more......
There are night shots, dusk shots, and rain, and some scenes with alot of dust, which make it hard to get that "pop" we all desire.
I saw a time or two of blocking.
There are still lots of shots which really look nice.
This title was done with VC-1.
All in all it still looks good, yes it could have been better, I'll post some screen shots later.

Is this the show that was filmed by a Swiss couple?
If so, this has one of the most awesome scenes I've ever watched in a "nature" show and I've seen a lot of them.
A slow-mo of a male lion chasing down a hyena.
I think it was originally titled "The War Between Lions & Hyenas" or something like that on Discovery several years back.
If this is the same one I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Not the same program. This is about the battle between a pride of lions and the large caped buffalo herds. I wish National Geographics would release the Imax movie Mysteries of Egypt. It had Omar Shariff and a now teen age Kate Maberly (Secret Garden). That one would be nice on HD DVD.
